The Angel of Indian Lake: #bookreview

I used to be all about the final girl standing on top of a pile of the dead at the end of the movie, her face dripping blood, her chest heaving, her eyes fierce. Now I’m all about holding the door of the slasher-proof shelter open, so everybody can duck in, ride this out.”
― Jade Daniels, “The Angel of Indian Lake”

In The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones, readers are brought back to Proofrock, Idaho after a four-year hiatus. Four years that Jade Daniels has spent in prison for a crime that she didn’t commit.

Our heroine, Jade Daniels, is back for the final chapter of The Indian Lake Trilogy. After serving time in prison, Jade is back in her hometown of Proofrock. She’s not the same person that she was but we still love her.

Jade has matured so much but she still knows all the rules of the horror movie genre. Sometimes all of that knowledge helps her but not all of the time. Shortly after her return, there is a massive forest fire, a massacre by bears and more killings by Jade’s personal boogie man, her father.

If you know the rules of horror trilogies, that will be immensely helpful in understanding this book. I found a video where Randy from Scream 3 explains it all: Trilogy Rules.

Jade doesn’t even consider that she is a final girl. In a way, she still sees herself as the half Native American misfit that we met in “My Heart is a Chainsaw.” The town is a bit freaked out to see her again. They associate her with the two traumatic massacres that occured in the area.

At first, Jade thinks that urban legend “Lake Witch” Stacey Graves might have returned to seek vengeance. Graves cannot go into the water since it is a Christian burial ground and she is Native American. There’s another female character that seems like La Llorona but who is she? These two things will make so much more sense at the end.

Jade believes that at best she is the sidekick to the final girl. She wholeheartledly believes that her best friend, Letha, is the final girl of all final girls. We don’t disagree that Letha could be the one that survives. Why can’t it be both of them though? They are each others ride or die so we should allow it.

Letha is my favorite character besides Jade. She is a force to be reckoned with – as much of a momma bear at the actual bears in the beginning of the book.

The images above are what AI and I think that Letha and Jade would look like in real life.

I read the book twice – once last winter and again this month. The audiobook was really helpful to me since I missed a few details in the first reading. I would recommend reading all of the books of the trilogy in order. Maybe if someone could make a timeline that we could see at the end or in between books that would be amazing. All of the details can be a bit overwhelming.

If you love horror movies, then you will love Angel of Indian Lake as well as the other books in the trilogy.

If you are squeamish or a fake final girl then you might not enjoy this book as much as I did. I don’t think that I’m a final girl but probably the final girl’s nerdy best friend.

  • I received this book from NetGalley. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own. Obviously.
