The first look poster of Thappad was shared yesterday on social media platforms and it showed a close up of Taapsee Pannu’s face reeling from the impact of a ‘thappad (slap.)’ The poster led many to speculate what the movie will be about and many social media users predicted it may explore the issue of domestic violence.

The trailer of Thappad was released online today. The trailer shows an upset Taapsee Pannu meeting a lawyer to file a petition under Section 9 (Restitution of Conjugal Rights) of the Indian Penal Code. The lawyer tries to find out the reason behind the petition and learns it all started with a ‘thappad.’

The trailer takes the viewer through the happy times the couple (Taapsee Pannu and her husband) have, leading to a scene where Amu (Taapsee) is slapped in public. The rest of the trailer shows how Amu’s maid shares her own stories of domestic abuse and how Amu’s mother says a little bit of slapping is normal in any marriage. Despite many people attempting to dissuade her from going to the court, Amu firmly stands her ground.
The trailer subtly conveys how the Indian society is bogged down by patriarchal values and how domestic abuse is normalised.
Thappad will see Taapsee Pannu reuniting with director Anubhav Sinha, with whom she previously worked on the courtroom drama Mulk. Thappad also stars Pavail Gulati, Dia Mirza, Tanvi Azmi and Ram Kapoor.
