Recently, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) were brutally attacked by unknown individuals brandishing lathis, sticks, hammers and knives.  This brazen attack attracted sharp criticism against the failure of the Delhi Police for their lack of action. The Country is witnessing multiple protests in different cities against the ruling Government’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC.)

While many Bollywood bigwigs are yet to break their silence about where they stand on the CAA-NRC, a few influential celebrities like Anurag Kashyap, Javed Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar already made their stand clear.

Following the attacks on the students of JNU, Deepika Padukone, one of the most well known Bollywood celebrities, showed up on the JNU campus to express solidarity with the protestors, denouncing the brutal attack.  The protest was called by the JNU Teachers’ Association and the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU.)

Deepika Padukone’s visit to JNU comes just a couple of days before the release of her film Chhapaak, which is produced by Deepika herself and of which she is the leading cast.  Not long after the news broke out about her visit to JNU, a spokesperson of the ruling Party tweeted to boycott her films for siding with the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang.’

Since then, Deepika Padukone and her film Chhapaak started trending on Twitter, with users taking sides with her or against her.  #BoycottChhapaak, #DeepikaPadukone and #ChhapakDekhoTapakSe are some of the latest trends on Twitter.

Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak will be released in theaters on January 10th and even though this move was sure to attract hate and bad publicity from right wingers, she chose to stand up for her beliefs.
