A R Rahman 53rd Birthday – Achievements Of The Mozart of Madras

Indians are fond of their music, whether it is in movies or just the simple old albums.  Given the diverse and rich history of different cultures in India, it is no wonder all these multiple experiences culminate in a rich musical history.  Allah Rakha Rahman, popularly known as A.R. Rahman and the Mozart of Madras, is one of India’s finest music directors and singers. He is remembered for his work in various film industries and languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English.  Over the course of his illustrious career, the singer won multiple accolades, awards and honours.

Let us have a look at some of the famous awards and recognitions won by A.R. Rahman.

1) Academy Awards (Oscars)

Academy Awards are widely recognised as a major award function widely anticipated all over the world and where winners are awarded the coveted Oscar.  A.R. Rahman gained widespread fame when he won 2 Academy Awards for his work on the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

A.R. Rahman won the Oscar for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, which he shared with Gulzar.  He won the latter for the song Jai Ho from the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

2) BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards celebrates the best of television (TV) and motion pictures.  A.R. Rahman won the Best Film Music award for Slumdog Millionaire and was nominated for the Best Film Music for his work on 127 Hours as well.

3) Golden Globe Awards

Another major awards ceremony, which aims to recognize the excellence of films both in America and internationally, is hosted by the Foreign Press Association.  A.R. Rahman won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for Slumdog Millionaire.

4) Grammy Awards

Grammy Awards is the biggest awards ceremony which recognizes excellence in the music industry.  A.R. Rahman won two Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media (Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire.)  

5) National Film Awards

A.R. Rahman won six National Film Awards for his work in the Tamil and Hindi industries.  He won four National Film Awards for Best Music Direction in Tamil films. In 2001, A.R. Rahman’s music in the Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan, which is a period drama, won him a National FIlm Award for  Best Music Direction. In 2017, Rahman also won the Best Background Score for the movie Mom (2017,) which starred the late Sridevi.

6) Filmfare Awards

Filmfare Awards is one of India’s biggest award shows and A.R. Rahman won multiple awards for Best Music Director, spread over different editions, for films like Rangeela, Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan, Saathiya, Rang De Basanti, Guru, Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na, Delhi 6 and Rockstar.

7) Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan

The Indian Government recognized the contributions and services of A.R. Rahman and honoured him by bestowing him with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour, in 2000.  A.R. Rahman was later conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in 2010.
