Vicky Kaushal And Ayushmann Khurrana Win National Film Award For Best Actor

India and Indians love their movies so much, there are multiple fim industries based on regionality and language.  Every year, we discover each of these industries release critical hits, movies which tackle stigmas, are dramas or just pure comedy.  The National Film Awards, instituted in 1954, celebrate Indian cinema and is a ceremony where awards are distributed to actors, movies and various other stakeholders of the film industry in general.  The recently hosted National Film Awards for the year 2018 saw Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal share the National Film Award for Best Actor for their work on Andhadhun and Uri: The Surgical Strike respectively.

Let us have a look at these 2 films which earned them the Award.

Andhadhun

Andhadhun is a dark comedy crime thriller film which saw Ayushman Khurrana playing the role of the protagonist, Akash, who is blind.  The film is loosely inspired from the French short film L’Accordeur (The Piano Tuner.)  The film follows the story of a seemingly blind pianist who is not really blind.  Akash witnesses a murder when he is asked to perform for a former actor. He sees the actor’s dead body when he goes to his house to perform and decides to report it to the police.  Incidentally, the police officer is the one with whom the deceased actor’s wife is having an affair. The rest of the story follows how Akash really ends up going blind and how he tries to get his vision back.  Ayushmann Khurrana spent time observing blind people in order to learn the nuances of acting blind as well as using a special lens which impaired his vision by around 80 %. He even learnt how to play the piano.   He practised playing the piano four hours a day. Ayushmann Khurrana’s films are usually successful, owing to his extremely good acting skills and it is no wonder he won the accolade of Best Actor at this year’s National Film Awards.

Uri: The Surgical Strike

Uri: The Surgical Strike is a military action movie based on the terrorist attacks against the Indian Army officers in Uri and the subsequent retaliation by India.  The movie is divided into five chapters, which provide the background about the events building up to the surgical strike.  The plot of the story follows the story of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, a para special forces officer who is tasked with carrying the surgical strike against the terrorists who orchestrated the Uri attacks in India.  Vicky Kaushal was spot on in essaying the role of the special forces soldier. He trained in mixed martial arts, underwent weapons training and trained with ‘The Sikh Regiment.’ The film’s dialogue “How’s the josh?” struck a chord with the Indian population, with the dialogue being used by many famous personalities.

This edition of the National Film Awards saw South Indian actress Keerthy Suresh winning the top honour of Best Actress for MahanatiPadman won the National Film Award for Best Social Film of 2018.
