Best Shah Rukh Khan Films Of The Decade

Shah Rukh Khan, also known as SRK and the Badshah of Bollywood, has the kind of popularity many other actors aspire to reach in their career.  He acted in many films widely loved by the audiences. He can essay any role with a flair which he has trademarked. Over the decade, he acted in many films, some of which hit the ball right out of the park, while some missed.  Let us look at the best SRK films of this decade.

My Name is Khan

The film, which was released in 2010, had Shah Rukh Khan essaying the role of Rizwan Khan, a man with Asperger’s syndrome.  Rizwan has various special skills, especially the ability to repair things. He has an elder brother who settles down in the United States of America.  After their mother passes away, Rizwan goes to the United States to live with his brother. In the United States, Rizwan meets and falls in love with a Hindu woman, Mandira (played by Kajol) and ends up marrying her, going against his brother’s wishes.  The story is then about how prejudice against Muslims and Islamophobia post the 9/11 terrorist attacks affect the family and how Rizwan tries to mend his family after Mandira and he lose their son. The film won 3 awards at the 56th Filmfare Awards, with Shah Rukh Khan winning the Best Actor award, Karan Johar winning the Best Director award and Kajol winning the Best Actress award.

Don 2

The film, released in 2011, is a sequel to Don: The Chase Begins.  This film picks up five years after the events of Don, in which Don conquers the Asian underworld.  This film follows how Don sets his sights on the European underworld and how he plans to sit at the head of it.  The plot is based on how he turns himself to the authorities to break out an old rival from prison. Following this, he recruits a team to steal European currency plates and hatches a plan so that the authorities end up arresting all the underworld bosses of Europe, leaving the throne for Don’s taking.  The film was nominated at the 57th Filmfare Awards for the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film and won the Best Sound Design and the Best Action awards.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

The film was released in 2012 and follows the story of Samar Anand, a bomb defusal expert in the Indian Army.  The film follows how Akira Rai (Anushka Sharma) comes across a diary of Samar Anand. She ends up reading the diary and learns of his struggles as an immigrant in London where he met his love interest of the time, Meera Thapar, played by Katrina Kaif.  It gives the background for Samar becoming a bomb defusal expert. The rest of the film follows with how Samar battles with retrograde amnesia and how Akira helps in tracking Meera and reuniting her with Samar. This movie saw Anuskha Sharma winning the Best Supporting Actress at the 58th Filmfare Awards.

Chennai Express

This film was released in 2013 and was originally titled Ready Steady PoChennai Express stars Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul Mithaiwala and Deepika Padukone as Meenamma, Rahul’s love interest. Chennai Express follows the story of how Rahul accidentally boards a train travelling to Rameswaram, ‘Chennai Express,’ where he meets Meenamma, who is the daughter of a local don in Tamil Nadu.  Meenamma is trying to flee a forced marriage when she meets Rahul. When she is taken back by her cousins, she introduces Rahul as her husband, much to the chagrin of Tangaballi, whom she was supposed to marry.  The rest of the story shows how Rahul realizes he loves Meenamma and how he ends up persuading Meenamma’s father and Tangaballi about his love. The movie has a song, Lungi Dance, dedicated to Rajinikanth, in the post credits.

Dear Zindagi

This film was released in 2016 and is a coming of age drama.  Dear Zindagi features Alia Bhatt in the lead role as Kaira and Shah Rukh Khan plays a supporting role as Dr. Jehangir Khan.  The film depicts the story of Kaira, who is diagnosed with depression and how she moves back to Goa to live with her parents.  Following many sleepless nights, she seeks out Dr. Jehangir Khan, a psychologist, to help her with her depression and insomnia.  The rest of the plot is about how Dr. Jehangir Khan helps Kaira confront her demons and finally pursue her passion.

Raees

This film was released in 2017 and belongs to the action crime genre.  Raees was said to be based on the life of Abdul Latif, an associate of Dawood Ibrahim, the Indian underworld mafia don.  However, the filmmakers denied this and iterated the movie is a work of fiction. The film follows the story of Raees, who starts out as a bootlegger in the state of Gujarat, which enforces prohibition of alcohol.  The rest of the story is about his relationships, his rise to the top of the mafia and his eventual downfall. Raees was the most pirated film of 2017.  Shah Rukh Khan was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Filmfare Awards.

The 54 year old actor will next star in a film called Sanki, which is scheduled to be released in 2020.  The charismatic actor is truly the Badshah of Bollywood and he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.  We can expect more hits from Shah Rukh Khan in the next decade as well.
