Did Square Enix Just Tease Long-Awaited Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake?

Square Enix teased the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3 after the publisher confirmed it back in May 2021, three years ago.

Today marks Dragon Quest Day, and what better news! Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake has finally received a teasing update. A post on the official Dragon Quest X/Twitter teased the game, which was originally announced back in May 2021. There were no further updates for the past three years. The game is known to be a recreation of the classic RPG but in the style of games like Octopath Traveler. It was confirmed to be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

“The legend of Erdrick draws near,” the post read, while a short teaser video ends with the phrase: “The legacy begins.” The video also had the symbol from the Dragon Quest 3 logo, known as the Mark of Erdrick, while hinting that it will be a multiplatform release. This messaging has led some to speculate that the game will actually be an HD-2D remake of the first three Dragon Quest games, given that the games are sometimes referred to as the ‘Erdrick trilogy’.

Three years ago, Square Enix stated how they would be working on five Dragon Quest games. So, this could be the start of the remake of the trilogy since Dragon Quest 3 is chronologically the first game in the trilogy and marks the first time the hero is named Erdrick. It’s likely just referring to this.

HD-2D is the visual style used by Square Enix for a number of its recent RPGs, including the Octopath Traveler games, Triangle Strategy and its remake of Live A Live. The publisher perfected the HD-2D style when Octopath Traveler was released for Nintendo Switch in 2018, which had 2D characters moving through high-quality backgrounds in a tribute to classic turn-based RPGs.

To get a sense of the scale of the franchise’s popularity, Dragon Quest games have sold over 82 million units worldwide since the first title was released in 1986, according to Square Enix. The last mainline entry in the series was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which was originally released for 3DS and PS4 in Japan in 2017 before its global release and to other platforms. A more detailed update should be imminent.
