Summer Game Fest 2024: What We Hope To See

For me, one of the highlights of summer was reading about the latest news from E3, the first looks at the next wave of blockbuster games as reported by my favourite game magazines. E3 may be no more, but we still have Summer Game Fest to fill that void.

This year’s event kicks off in just under two weeks. It’s anyone’s guess what new games might be announced and what known games will finally cast aside their veils of secrecy. When those big reveals go down, CGMagazine will bring you all the juiciest news.

So, as we await the annual midyear cavalcade of trailers, here are the five games we want to see most at Summer Game Fest 2024:

Honourable Mention: Metroid Prime

Nintendo has already said they’re skipping Summer Game Fest 2024 in favour of hosting a Nintendo Direct broadcast sometime in June. This has been their MO in recent years, foregoing the crowded stages of SGF and E3 and putting on their own show. Last year’s June Direct brought news on Pokemon Scarlet & Violet‘s DLC pass, Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

However, Samus Aran won’t escape our wishlists so easily. Even if the Nintendo Direct isn’t officially part of Summer Game Fest, our fingers and toes are crossed that we’ll see either the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4, or HD remasters of the remaining games in the trilogy, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. The newest installment has been MIA for too long now—announced 6 years ago, but almost unheard of since development reset 5 years ago—and last year’s HD remaster of the original was too good not to give its descendants the same treatment.

(We’ll even settle for having Metroid: Samus Returns ported to Switch, or Metroid Zero Mission added to Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pass.)

5) Kingdom Hearts 4

Kingdom Hearts 4, the newest installment in the quirky crossover franchise uniting Disney and Square Enix, was announced at the series’ 20th anniversary in 2022—and like Metroid Prime 4, it’s been off the radar ever since. The initial reveal trailer shows a slightly older Sora waking in Quadratum, a new world that looks an awful lot like our own world’s Shibuya, and doing battle with an enormous Heartless.

It’s been two years since that brief footage of the game in its earliest development stages. Summer Game Fest 2024 would be the perfect place to pull back the curtain on Kingdom Hearts 4—fans were elated to learn the whole series is coming to Steam soon, and that hype has set the stage for a dramatic reveal.

4) Silent Hill 2

Horror fans have been patiently waiting for updates on the remake of Silent Hill 2 from Bloober Team and Konami. The reasons for that are twofold: the original is regarded as one of the best horror games ever made, but it’s being handled by a different team altogether, without insight from the original creators (aside from composer Akira Yamaoka).

Nor does it help that Bloober Team and modern-day Konami have something of a mixed record. Bloober’s The Medium split fans and critics, showing they had a strong concept but were perhaps lacking the means to pull it off technically. Meanwhile, earlier this year Konami released a short, free experience set in the Silent Hill universe dubbed The Short Message, which seemed to miss the franchise’s tone.

We’re hopeful that Summer Game Fest might provide a fresh look at the new Fable.

We’re eager to see Silent Hill 2‘s remake at Summer Game Fest in hopes that fans’s concerns could be allayed. With any luck, Bloober Team could show that they have what it takes to build upon the original’s legendary foundation and deliver a sufficiently spooky experience later this year.

3) Star Wars Eclipse

It’s likely that Ubisoft could show off Star Wars Outlaws at Summer Game Fest, but we haven’t forgotten about the other known Star Wars game in development: Star Wars Eclipse from Quantic Dream.

First shown over two years ago at the other big show Geoff Keighley spearheads, Eclipse is set in the pre-Prequels High Republic era, just like the upcoming series The Acolyte. Quantic Dream promised at the time that the game would feature a sprawling narrative with multiple protagonists and branching paths determined by player choices. Despite allegations about toxicity in their workplace, the studio’s pedigree would make an intriguing fit for Star Wars.

Though it might not launch in 2024, it would be nice to see a fresh look at Star Wars Eclipse at Summer Game Fest, to wet our whistles for a possible 2025 launch.

2) New Fable

The Xbox Series X|S has been light on exclusive experiences for most of its lifespan, so we’re hopeful that Summer Game Fest might provide a fresh look at the new Fable, which we originally saw at last June’s Xbox Games Showcase.

It’s been over a decade since the last game in this franchise, Fable 3, and many among the CGM staff are starving for a new installment. The new Fable, judging by only the brief reveal trailer, looks to be something of a departure from the series’ usual tone and style; changes like this can be either a saving grace or a fly in the ointment, and we’re eager to see more so we can judge for ourselves.

Particularly, more gameplay. The Fable series has always written bigger cheques than its final products can cash, so the sooner we see the game in action, the better.

1) Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Speaking of games a decade in the making, the game we want to see most desperately at Summer Game Fest 2024 is Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the long-awaited fourth game in the Dragon Age franchise.

Dragon Age: Inquisition and its round of DLC expansions set drastic stakes for its follow-up. However, a lot has changed at developer Bioware in the ten years since its original launch. Many studio veterans have left for greener pastures or different shores after making contributions to Dreadwolf.

We know that a former ally to the Inquisitor will likely be an antagonist for our new hero, whoever they are. Plus, it seems likely that Dreadwolf will finally take fans to the dark shores of Tevinter, perhaps with recurring ally Varric Tethras at our side, and that also means we might see Dorian once again as we explore his complicated homeland.

Hoping that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf might launch later this year, it’s high on the “most anticipated” lists of many CGM staffers. Our fingers are crossed that Summer Game Fest will finally blow the roof open on this new epic so we can see what BioWare has been cooking up for a decade. (Again, we’d accept a substitute, if they show us what those cryptic Mass Effect teasers mean instead. Ball’s in your court, BioWare, impress us!)
