Microsoft Announces Surface Pro 10 and Laptop 6, and Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft has taken the wraps off its latest Surface devices at an event ahead of its annual Build conference. The tech giant has unveiled the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, both of which are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chipsets, promising a significant performance boost over their predecessors.

The new Surface devices are part of Microsoft’s “Copilot+ PCs” initiative, which aims to integrate AI capabilities into its hardware and software offerings. According to Microsoft, the latest generation of Copilot+ PCs are faster than the MacBook Air M3, and GPT-4 capabilities are set to be integrated into Copilot within Windows 11. This performance boost relies on a combination of CPU, GPU and Neural Processing Unit (NPU), all working together to deliver over 40 trillion operations per second.

The Surface Laptop 6 is available in two sizes, with the 13.8-inch model starting at $999 and the 15-inch model at $1,199.99. The design remains largely unchanged from its predecessors, but the device now supports three 4K monitors in addition to its own display, a clear jab at Apple’s restrictive monitor compatibility on devices like the new Macbook Air M3. Microsoft claims an 80% improvement in performance over the previous generation, and the battery life is impressive, offering up to 22 hours of local video playback, an astounding claim for a Windows machine.

The Surface Pro 10, on the other hand, comes in a single 13-inch display size but with a gorgeous new OLED display with HDR. It also features a new bezel-integrated QHD ultra-widefield webcam that promises clearer team calls. The Flex keyboard has also undergone significant improvements, including a 14% larger touchpad with haptic feedback, more carbon fibre to minimize flex and improve performance and durability, and a slim pen that is now integrated into the keyboard cover itself.

The Surface Pro 10 starts at $999 for the base model with an LCD display, X Plus processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. For those seeking the premium OLED screen and X Elite processor, prices start at $1,500, with the top-end configuration featuring 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and the exclusive Platinum colour priced at $2,100. The new Flex Keyboard, priced at $450 and bundled with a Slim Pen, offers improved durability and versatility, working seamlessly both attached and detached from the Pro.

Even with all this excitement, much like we saw with this year’s Google I/O conference, much of the big news comes in terms of AI and how these machines connect you with the new set of tools. These AI capabilities will manifest through Copilot, offering additional features and improved integration with Microsoft applications such as Excel, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint. Microsoft is expected to emphasize artificial intelligence during the event, and the new Surface devices will showcase these AI capabilities.

While a lot of news hits the business and home side of things, Microsoft has not forgotten about Xbox. Details have emerged that Copilot will be integrated into the system, providing in-game tips and assistance along with other features, ensuring you won’t have to search online for basic information—much to the displeasure of guide-based websites everywhere. From what we see today, it is clear that Microsoft is fully committed to the AI bandwagon. Whether this gamble will pay off remains to be seen, but it certainly makes a splash, if nothing else.

Even if you’re skeptical about AI, these announcements, especially around the Surface line, demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation. The Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10 are available for preorder now, with shipping set to commence on June 18th.
