Netflix has revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Julia Roberts film, Leave the World Behind, and it has a loaded cast with a chilling premise.

A new film is coming to Netflix based on a novel, Leave the World Behind. The film is directed by the award-winning Director of Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail, and it is a cyber-apocalyptic story of epic proportions. The new Netflix original is based on the bestselling 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, and they’ve released an accompanying trailer that can be seen below.

This is not the first time Sam Esmail has worked with Julia Roberts, as he directed the 2018 film Homecoming, and due to that experience, the director reportedly knew the vision he had for the main character, “Amanda was Julia.” Esmail explains, “What’s really great about casting someone like Julia Roberts is that you don’t have to worry about the likeability factor,” with “Julia has the uncanny ability to channel the humanity out of any character, regardless of how flawed they may be” regarding the decision of Roberts’ casting.

Leave the World Behind is centred around a busy New York City-based couple who strives to get a vacation from their normal lives. Amanda (Roberts) and Clay (Ethan Hawke) rent out a luxurious mansion for a weekend with their kids, and unsuspectingly, the owners arrive home in the dead of the night, asking to stay at the home due to an inexplicable blackout. The rest of the star-studded cast is rounded out by G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and Ruth Scott (Myha’la Herrold), who portray the intruding homeowners, while the kids of Amanda and Clay are Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie).

Leave the World Behind will land on Netflix in the dead of the Winter, December 8. Fans can also swing over to the Netflix Tudum site for more cast info ahead of the release.
