ViewSonic OMNI VX2728J-2K Gaming Monitor Review

The 27-inch 1440p Gaming monitor market is more competitive than ever, with many options available from top brands. ViewSonic’s latest offering, the VX2728J-2K, aims to stand out by packing an impressive spec sheet into a relatively affordable package. Priced at just $249, this monitor includes a 165Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium support, and a fast 1ms response time. While it may not cater to everyone, the ViewSonic VX2728J-2K 27-inch gaming monitor punches well above its weight class and looks fantastic as it does so.

Unboxing Experience

Out of the box, the VX2728J-2K looks the part of a no-frills gaming display. The all-black exterior features thin bezels on three sides and a modest stand with tilt adjustment but no extra ergonomic options like height/swivel adjustment. The OSD controls are located on the bottom bezel and feel high-quality during use. Around the back, you’ll find two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort, and a 3.5mm audio out jack. There’s also a 100x100mm VESA mount for attaching to third-party monitor arms.

Navigating through the menus is easy thanks to the responsive 5-way joystick and clearly labelled options. The styling fits nicely with the monitor’s simple but modern aesthetic. Quick access buttons on the bottom bezel provide one-touch shortcuts for input selection and ViewMode presets.

Features and Details

At first glance, the feature set of the VX2728J-2K reads like a list of must-haves for PC gaming. The 27-inch panel uses IPS technology for vibrant colours and wide 178-degree viewing angles. With a native resolution of 2560 x 1440, you get extra sharp details compared to 1080p without the demanding GPU requirements of 4K. The 165Hz refresh rate is built for fast-paced competitive gaming, while FreeSync Premium helps eliminate tearing and stuttering by synchronizing the refresh rate with your AMD graphics card. Response time is rated at a speedy 1ms, and there’s even basic HDR10 support.

After using the VX2728J-2K for both gaming and productivity work, I’m happy to report it delivers on its promising spec sheet. Motion clarity lives up to the 165Hz refresh rate, with extremely fluid gameplay in shooters like Apex Legends or Fortnite. Fast motion showed no noticeable ghosting or smearing, which can often plague budget gaming monitors. I tested a wide variety of game genres, from competitive shooters to story-driven RPGs, and the refresh rate provided consistently smooth, tear-free performance.

Gaming Performance

First-person shooter fans will appreciate the motion clarity in games like Apex Legends, Valorant, and Call of Duty. Landing quick flick shots and tracking fast-moving targets felt extremely responsive, thanks to the combination of high refresh rate and low input lag. Enabling FreeSync eliminated tearing and perfectly complemented the 165Hz refresh for a truly high-end gaming experience.

For single-player games like Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption 2, the monitor provided an equally enjoyable experience. Animation and panning cameras looked stunningly fluid and natural. Exploring open-world environments in 1440p offered extra crisp details and vibrant colours thanks to the bright, accurate IPS panel. Even fast-paced action RPGs like Elden Ring played flawlessly with no dropped frames or choppy motion.

“While you miss out on some features like FreeSync with the ViewSonic OMNI VX2728J-2K Gaming Monitor when console gaming, the experience was still fantastic.”

Visuals are just as impressive, thanks to the bright, accurate IPS panel. Colours look lively, text is easy to read, and details are extra crisp at 1440p. Small objects in the distance remain clearly defined in shooters, while open-world vistas take on extra depth and clarity. Explosions and spell effects pop, thanks to the wide colour gamut. HDR performance is limited due to the low peak brightness of 250 nits, but it still provides a nice boost to colour vibrance and contrast in supported games for added eye candy. The matte anti-glare coating avoids unwanted reflections without negatively impacting image quality.

I also tested console gaming on the VX2728J-2K by hooking up my PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X via HDMI. While you miss out on some features like FreeSync with the ViewSonic OMNI VX2728J-2K Gaming Monitor when console gaming, the experience was still fantastic. Titles like Call of Duty felt extremely responsive with minimal input lag, and other games delivered solid 1440P performance. If you plan to use this monitor with both PC and consoles, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

For competitive gaming, the VX2728J-2K also delivers excellent responsiveness. The quoted 1ms response time isn’t far off the mark, judging by the minimal motion blur I experienced. Combined with the low input lag, this monitor provides a very responsive feel, giving you the split-second reactions needed for fast-paced multiplayer titles.

The VX2728J-2K puts in an admirable performance for productivity and general use as well. The extra screen real estate of 1440p makes it easy to multitask, while the flicker-free backlight and blue light filter settings helped reduce eyestrain during long working sessions. The stand offers tilt adjustment but lacks height or swivel options. External speakers or headphones will be required for sound since the 2W built-in speakers are predictably weak.

Value Proposition

Considering its budget-friendly $249 price tag, the ViewSonic OMNI VX2728J-2K Gaming Monitor presents remarkable value for shoppers seeking a high-performance 1440p gaming display. The 165Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium support provide flawlessly fluid gameplay, while the fast IPS panel delivers vivid colours and crisp details. Response time and input lag are quick enough for competitive multiplayer titles. You even get nice bonuses like the blue light filter and basic HDR10 support.

The no-frills design lacks premium features like a height-adjustable stand or RGB lighting. Serious PC enthusiasts may also prefer a higher 180Hz or 240Hz refresh rate for esports gaming. But for the price, it’s difficult to find a 1440p monitor that can match the VX2728J-2K’s combination of gaming performance and features. If your budget is around $250, the ViewSonic OMNI VX2728J-2K Gaming Monitor should be at the top of your list for buttery smooth 1440p gaming.
