Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Security Camera Review

When it comes to smart home security, a floodlight Camera like the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Security Camera is an excellent option for monitoring the exterior of your home. A good floodlight camera should have adjustable, bright LEDs to illuminate your property, high-quality video for sharp footage day and night, smart motion detection to catch unwanted visitors, and flexible storage options to save video clips.

Lorex’s new 2K Wired Floodlight Security Camera aims to check all these boxes and compete with brands like Ring, Arlo and Nest. I recently tested Lorex’s latest floodlight offering to see how it performs as an outdoor sentinel. After installing it and putting it through its paces, I found that Lorex delivers a robust security camera and floodlight combo at a reasonable price.

The Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Camera sports an imposing design in either black or white, measuring 8.5 by 11.0 by 8.2 inches. It has dual LED floodlights, each with a bright 2,400 lumens of adjustable brightness and colour temperature. This allows you to customize the floodlights so they aren’t too harsh but still illuminate your yard effectively.

An IP65 weatherproof rating means the Lorex camera can handle the elements, while infrared night vision ensures clear video footage even in total darkness. The 2K wired camera records crisp 2,560 x 1,440 resolution video at 15fps through a wide 122-degree field of view lens. Lorex says the camera’s night vision reaches up to 33 feet.

“It is impressive just how simple the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Camera is to set up.”

The Lorex floodlight camera also packs in motion detection, a built-in siren, microphone and speaker for 2-way audio, and compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant for voice controls. The camera comes with 32GB of local storage, upgradable to 256GB if you want continuous recording. It is impressive just how simple the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Camera is to set up. Once you have everything installed on the wall, the app walks you through getting everything ready. All in all, the whole system only took around 30 minutes to get up and running, and that includes the installation and electrical.

Unboxing the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Security Camera, the system has everything you would need to install it. If you don’t have a pre-existing electrical box at the ready, you will need to get one sorted, from there it is a simple matter of making sure wires are connected as needed and ensuring all screws and gaskets are in place to keep the wires away from environmental hazards like rain and the system ready to watch and protect as you sleep or are away.

I installed the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Camera outside the CGMagazine office’s main entrance to test its video quality, motion detection and smart features. Installation was straightforward since I have some electrical experience, though the process will vary for everyone. There was already a light figure, so it was a simple process of turning off the power, removing the old fixture, and installing the new Lorex.

Once mounted, the camera’s 2K video lived up to its high resolution, appearing sharp and colourful during the day. At night, the infrared LEDs provided excellent contrast and clarity up to the rated 33-foot distance. The floodlights reacted quickly to motion, easily covering our entrance and walkway with illumination and a video feed. The system is tailor-made for people looking to add extra security for a house, office, or even to keep an eye on your prized car you know your kids may want to borrow.

The camera accurately detected people and cars, sending push notifications to my phone within just a few seconds of movement. I could also trigger the bright floodlights on command using Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls. Two-way audio through the Lorex app worked well, with clear sound in both directions. The app is simple to use and makes all the camera’s functions a simple matter to dive into. It is also great how it keeps track of people coming to the office doors, making sure we never miss a package due to a delivery driver leaving it outside the door.

Lorex’s mobile app (for iOS and Android) provides full control over the camera’s settings like motion detection sensitivity, scheduling, floodlight brightness and more. The app makes adjusting the camera’s many options a breeze. Lorex also says a future update will bring a useful auto-zoom feature that automatically follows and frames moving objects in the camera’s view.

Compared to a Ring outdoor camera, I found the Lorex offered a much clearer and easier-to-see picture, giving a much more robust picture and detail should the video be needed in case of an emergency. Combine that with fantastic motion detection that can be adjusted easily in the app, and Lorex is hard to deny offers a more interesting offering over its Ring counterpart. I love the ability to record based on motion and keep a history of motion, thanks to the built-in SD card. For people looking to get the most out of the system, upgrading the card to 256GB gives an incredibly versatile offering.

Honestly, Lorex has addressed most needs an average person would need when looking for a simple to use and affordable security solution. The Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Security Camera was a breath of fresh air in a sea of subscription services and needlessly complex accounts just to do simple things. It all works as anyone could hope, and it looks sleek and modern when all set up.

The Lorex camera does have a couple of drawbacks to keep in mind. It lacks support for Apple HomeKit and IFTTT integrations, which may disappoint iOS users who want deeper smart home connectivity. Also, Lorex’s camera requires wiring to your electrical system for installation. While Lorex provides clear instructions and makes the process straightforward, some DIYers may prefer a wireless option to avoid electrical work. Professional installation is recommended if you don’t have electrical experience. Finally, there is no integration with Lorex’s own Smart Home Security ecosystem.

When it comes to securing your home, the Lorex 2K Wired Floodlight Camera makes a compelling case. Its 2K video clarity and versatile motion detection provide robust surveillance day and night. The adjustable floodlights are extremely bright yet customizable, neatly illuminating areas you want to watch.

Installation requires wiring know-how, but Lorex simplifies the process as much as possible. For most homeowners, professional help will be advisable. Once set up, the Lorex camera is a breeze to control through the well-designed mobile app.

If recurring fees make you hesitate about many security cameras, the Lorex 2K model warrants a close look. Its stellar night vision, crisp 2K footage, adjustable floodlights, and local storage options check all the major boxes. Before choosing Lorex, be realistic about the installation demands to avoid frustrations down the road. But for a robust wired camera without monthly costs, Lorex deserves strong consideration.
