CES 2023: Sony Unveils PS5 Project Leonardo, A Customizable Accessibility Controller Kit

Sony made quite a splash at CES 2023, and during their event they’ve introduced a PS5 accessibility controller kit to meet the demands of all gamers.

As CES 2023 wears on this week, tech companies continue to unveil the very best innovations from behind closed doors out to the public for the first time, and Sony has done just that. On Thursday at CES 2023 they’ve pulled back the curtain on the brand new Project Leonardo, a wide range accessibility controller kit for the PS5, designed to thin the barrier between gamers with disabilities and the games they want to play.

Senior Vice President of Platform Experience at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino says “Through conversations with accessibility experts and incredible organizations like AbleGamers, SpecialEffect and Stack Up, we’ve designed a highly configurable controller that works in tandem with many third-party accessibility accessories and integrates with the PS5 console to open up new ways of gaming. It is built to address common challenges faced by many players with limited motor control, including difficulty holding a controller for long periods, accurately pressing small clusters of buttons or triggers, or positioning thumbs and fingers optimally on a standard controller,” expanding on accessibility, such as the options included in The Last of US Part I and God of War Ragnarok.

Key Features of Project Leonardo at CES 2023

  • There is a wide array of customization options designed to tailor fit the Project Leonardo to the user, providing for the individual’s needs.
  • Even analog stick distance from the rest of the gamepad can be adjusted accordingly.
  • The Project Leonardo features complete button mapping, even allowing for two buttons to be pressed concurrently with one button press.
  • Up to three controller profile settings can be saved on the Project Leonardo, allowing for gamers to swap between control layouts for different titles at a whim.
  • Four 3.5mm AUX ports to support a variety of external switches and third-party accessibility accessories
  • Flexible options are available like tripod support, and the ability to lay flat can help users as well.
  • Players can pair up to two Project Leonardo’s and a DualSense at once for maximum control options, as well as allowing another player to help if necessary.

The Project Leonardo is shaping up to be an announcement of innovation as Sony continues to provide accessibility options for their platform. While Project Leonardo is still in development, Sony is still looking for feedback after the announcement at CES 2023, so fans can check out the official PlayStation Blog for further information on the device or how to offer feedback.
