6 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Smell Fresher

Have you ever walked in your front door and thought, “What IS that foul stench?!”

Weird smells in your home can come from anywhere; your vents, your fridge, and naturally, your shoes.

Sometimes it seems like they come from right out of nowhere!

In an effort to make your home Smell Fresher, you’ll try any number of methods, some of which don’t work.

Thankfully there are some great ways to get rid of foul smells in the house, that’re actually very simple to make, and can take no time to start working.

Here are 6 easy ways to make your home smell fresher:

“Pot on the Stove” Air Freshener

For a long-lasting amazing aroma that scents your entire home, try this “pot on the stove” recipe. This method can be used around the winter holidays to create a warm, homey feel.

It’s also great in summer to get rid of gross, sweaty smells that seem to come from all over the place. You can even mix and match your ingredients for a scent that’s unique to you and your own home.

Below is a basic recipe, but if you don’t have ingredients like these hanging around, you can also just put a couple of drops of Essential Oil in a pot of water on the stove. It works just as well (I like coconut essential oil, or lavender essential oil):

  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 bay leaf, fresh if possible
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

DIY Beeswax Candles

Beeswax candles give off a light honey-like scent, and they also have a purifying effect on the air in your home.

These candles give off negative ions when burned, which neutralizes bad ions like allergens, dust and airborne toxins. So in addition to adding good smells to the air in your house, you’re also cleaning the air whenever you burn these soothing candles.

Homemade Air Freshener

This one is a secondary way to scent your home, using the water from your “Pot on the Stove” Air Freshener.

When I put a couple of drops of essential oil in a pot of shallow water on the stove to scent the house, that pot of water actually has two uses.

Typically when the water doesn’t completely dissipate, once it cools down, I simply pour that scented water into a spray bottle, and use it as air freshener! You can even use it as linen spray, as the ingredients for linen spray are distilled water, and fragrance in some form.

Fruit Rind Air Freshener

Instead of just masking bad odors, you can use sea salt to actually get rid of them.

Fill half of a hollowed out citrus fruit with sea salt and set it somewhere where it can soak up the bad smells. Make sure it’s out of reach of little fingers or pets. Replace the rind and salt every few days to keep the space fresh and odor free.

Garbage Disposal Smells

If your garbage disposal is making your eyes water, there are two ways to fix that. First send a burst of citrus down the drain to clean up that situation, by simply chopping up a lemon or an orange, and tossing the peels down the garbage disposal. It gets rid of the offending odors in record time!

Fridge Deodorizer

That little box of baking soda not doing such a great job on it’s own?

Why not give it a little help with a dab of essential oil? Obviously you don’t want a super strong floral scent that taints the taste of food in the fridge, so stick with citrus smells instead of floral scents, and start with less oil, and add more as needed.

*BONUS

All of these methods of making your home smell fresher are great, but lets not forget about the most effective, and possibly the simplest one; opening a few windows! As long as there’s no ‘stink’ outside, bringing the outside in is THE most effective way to freshen your home.

Peace
