NASA is sending a helicopter to the planet Mars

NASA is planning to add a Helicopter in its next mission to Mars which will launch in 2020. It will be the first human craft to fly on another planet. Till now Mars has hosted orbiters, rovers, and landers, but no flying machines. If the mission will succeed it will open the entirely new way of exploring the world.

The development of the Helicopter begins in 2013, This tiny helicopter’s designing, testing and redesign weigh in at little under four pounds (1.8 kilograms). The Helicopter will work only for 30 days including 5 flights. In the beginning, there will be hovering tests for 10 feet off the ground. It will work up to longer flights enduring 90 seconds.

NASA is yet to make a final decision to add a helicopter to the mission. NASA will only agree if adding a helicopter does not put the entire mars 2020 mission into risk. A further helicopter may distract the rover work for a minimum of 30 days.

If the helicopter is successful, NASA hopes that future versions could be used as scouting missions for other rovers, or to image regions inaccessible to a wheeled explorer.
