Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance

Whether your clients are looking to improve their fitness, or their strength, or are just trying to lose some weight, it doesn’t matter how much Exercise they do unless they have the correct diet for their goal.

If you take a marathon runner for example, they will need to be eating at maintenance calories, while taking in enough protein to maintain their muscle mass and plenty of carbohydrates to ensure they have enough energy stored in the body for their runs.

However, when comparing this to your average joe who wants to lose some weight and get a little fitter, their diet would require a calorie deficit, high protein levels and moderate intake of carbs and fats.

Why Nutrition is important?

Food plays a vital role in our health, and while exercise is also key to helping with our health and fitness, it works in tandem with what you eat, making nutrition a huge part of the fitness process.

If your clients are looking to lose weight, this is difficult to do with exercise alone as their diet will be the underpinning factor to their progress. When it comes to physical activity, eating well can have huge benefits, such as:

  • Enabling clients to perform their best.
  • Reducing the risk of injury and illness.
  • Ensuring the best recovery after exercise.

Dieting for weight loss

When you start to train you clients, it’s important to have a clear grasp of nutrition to best help them.

If you have someone who knows they are 10kg overweight, their goal will be to lose that 10 kilos. Now for most people the first thing they will do is lace up their trainers and head for a run or to the gym without even checking what they have in the fridge or cupboards.

You cannot out-train a bad diet, no matter how much exercise you do. The best way to lose weight is to check your nutrition and then look at your activity levels. If your diet is balanced, then it is likely down to your low activity levels that have caused the weight gain.

To ensure weight loss a person has to be in a calorie deficit. This cant be done through eating less calories than you require in a day, exercising more to burn more calories in a day or combining a balance of the two.
