Get more out of your personal training sessions

As we enter the new year, many individuals, whether they currently work out regularly or not, will be coming to the realisation they overdid it at Christmas and New Year.

They’re not alone in this, with a dinner bigger than any other throughout the year, a seemingly never-ending stack of cheese and chocolate, with alcohol on top, research has found that most people gain around two pounds at this time of year. Of course, this year may be a little different with varying levels of lockdown present across the country, there was nothing much to do other than eat, eat, eat.

Not a normal year

However, the difference this year is, while most people would either return to the gym or join one come January 1st, setting into motion a million and one different resolutions to shed those extra pounds, 2021 is a little different. With a new lockdown comes another swathe of gym closures, making it tougher for individuals to get to work.

While many will be wondering ‘how can I improve my gym sessions’, as a personal trainer, you’ll no doubt be thinking how can I improve my PT sessions for clients during this tough time of year during a lockdown.

Below, we’ve highlighted a few ways you can improve your Personal Training Sessions for clients to ensure they stay focused during the third lockdown this winter.

Talk to clients

First things first, it’s important to catch up with your clients as soon as possible following the festive period. This can be done over the phone or via an online channel such as Zoom, Teams, or Skype.

Here you can ask them about what they did over Christmas, what are their concerns, and what are their goals going forward as they may have changed. While it may seem a little generic, this is a great chance for you to re-connect with clients while helping them to get more out of your Training Sessions.

Prepare plans

This conversation will ultimately allow you to edit or completely change the fitness plan you made for your client. If they had a food plan, it’ll also help you to work on this.

As you won’t be able to meet face to face, you could try setting up a shared Google sheet where you can highlight what they need to be doing, and where they can keep you informed of anything that is or isn’t working.

Apps, such as My Fitness Pal are a great way to keep an eye on what clients are consuming and the exercise they’re partaking in when you’re not working one-on-one, which can help you to continually amend their plans as you progress.

The power of online

The best way to get more out of your Personal Training sessions while in a winter lockdown is to harness online.

Now, you may have done this previously, however, after nearly a year in lockdown, if you haven’t, now is the time to do it.

From filming your own YouTube videos that clients can use when not working one-on-one to setting up Facebook Live sessions for group classes and even personal Zoom sessions, where you can work one to one with clients. This will help to keep up the interaction with each client on a personal basis, while also allowing you to offer various workout sessions throughout the week from your home.

Another positive to this is it could help you to pick up new clients in the New Year. This may include those who can’t join a gym or may have been afraid to join one in the past, who can now experience a workout one-on-one from their front room.

The great outdoors

While outdoor meetings by multiple households aren’t allowed currently if you’re looking to improve personal training sessions, encourage your clients to get outside.

Again, you can track this on apps such as Map My Run and My Fitness Pal so you can stay informed on your client’s progress. However, while we can’t meet up outdoors yet, we may be able to soon, so start thinking about how you can improve your workout regime with group and one-on-one outdoor sessions once you can meet up. You could even use your spare time to scope out locations.

In the meantime, our Outdoor Fitness Coach Course could help you to get ahead of outdoor exercises for your clients. Providing you with the ability to mix up your sessions with outdoor activities, not only will it help to add a string to your bow, but work to keep you active in your spare time during the rest of lockdown.
