Transforming Lives Through Fitness: Level 3 Personal Trainer Jane Stansfield

Personal training is a fulfilling and rewarding career that can have a positive impact on people’s lives. It requires a combination of physical fitness, knowledge, and a passion for helping others. In this case study, we will be exploring the journey of Jane Stansfield, a Personal trainer who completed her training with Cms Fitness Courses. Through her experiences and success stories, we will gain insight into the Personal Training profession and what it takes to be a successful personal trainer.

Meet Jane Stansfield

Jane is a Level 3 personal trainer who has a passion for fitness and helping others achieve their health and fitness goals. She is a client of CMS Fitness Courses, where she completed her level 2 gym instructor course and her level 3 personal training qualification. With a background in running and a desire to learn more about strength training, Jane became interested in the level 3 personal training course. Through her own experiences and her work with clients, Jane has become an expert in working with the 40+ age bracket, focusing on strength, weight-bearing, and mobility to help her clients improve their overall health and fitness. In this case study, we will explore Jane’s journey as a personal trainer and learn about her approach to personal training and the success stories of her clients.

How did you become interested in personal training and what inspired you to pursue it as a career?

I have always been interested in keeping fit and did an awful lot of running to achieve this. However, I had never strength trained and was interested to find out what it was all about. Working with my own personal trainer really opened my eyes to what being fit, healthy and strong was all about. I was inspired, I learned so much and grew fitter and stronger than I thought possible. It was then I noticed that there didn’t seem to be many PTs in roughly the same age group as myself. I found myself wondering how many other women, (and men), of a certain age were out there and wanted to improve their fitness goals but were intimidated by the gym environment, or just didn’t know where to start. It was after a particularly stressful year in my day job that I realised I needed to work in an environment I loved, do something I enjoyed and where I felt I could make a difference. I signed up with CMS to my Level 2 Fitness Instructor, got a job in a gym when I passed and continued with my Level 3 PT qualification.

What do you consider to be your areas of expertise in personal training?

As an older personal trainer, I have clients who are mainly in the 40+ age bracket as they feel comfortable and don’t feel intimidated. I work on strength, weight-bearing and mobility to try and help them future-proof their health and fitness. So, I guess my expertise lies within this age group and the challenges which go with it. Having worked on my own fitness from the same age I understand the physical and mental issues which they may face as I have faced similar if not the same.

What are some common challenges that your clients face and how do you help them overcome these challenges?

Strength, Mobility and Dietary are the main challenges. Listening and understanding where my clients are coming from is key. We work together to find manageable solutions and ways forward so they are still working towards their goals but they don’t feel overwhelmed by them.

How do you motivate and encourage your clients to reach their fitness goals?

To motivate and encourage my clients I make a point of talking about their achievements and show them how much they have progressed. If we are working on weights, I total up the amount of weight they have moved in the session and it never ceases to amaze them. I give them little added things to work on between sessions to keep them motivated, inspired and interested. It may not be something I’ve worked on in that session but it will give them a slightly new focus. I change their programmes regularly to reflect their progress and to keep them motivated. I do try to check in with clients in between sessions with some words of encouragement especially If I know a client is struggling.

Can you share some success stories or case studies of clients you have worked with in the past?

After completing my level 3 personal training course, I was working with one of my clients who had booked a walking holiday in the Pyrenees and they needed to get fitter and stronger for this. I sat down with her and worked out a strength and cardio programme for her to follow which fitted around her lifestyle and we had one PT session a week. Our first session was focused on finding out how fit she was to begin with, and over the course of several months, she saw significant improvement in her fitness level. She was able to complete her walking holiday with ease, and the strength and cardio programme that we worked on together helped her to improve her overall health and fitness.

What sets your approach to personal training apart from others in the industry?

I think what sets me apart is that my approach comes from being passionate about helping my clients realise that you can improve your fitness at any age.  It’s not about being a superwoman/man it’s about being fit and healthy enough to be able to have a good quality of life, to do the things you enjoy and to be able to do all the normal things in life such as picking things up of the floor. I am constantly saying to people that age is a number not a barrier.   I train people from an approach of experience, empathy and understanding.

How do you stay up to date on the latest research and trends in the field of personal training?

I am always reading books and articles on current trends in the personal training field etc.  I read blogs, articles and listen to podcasts.  I also take part in refresher training and ad hoc training courses such as core training, TRX training etc

How would you rate the Level 3 Personal Trainer course with CMS Fitness Courses?

It was absolutely brilliant.

What did you like and why?

The level 3 PT course was extremely well put together and in a logical order.  I am someone who works in a methodical way and it really worked for me.  It was in-depth and the knowledge checkers were brilliant at helping the knowledge stick.

I loved the fact that there was a section on building your personal training business, doing your research, marketing plans and strategies, putting a business plan together etc.  It was so useful and really helped me get my head around things.

Anything else you would like to add?

The support I had whilst studying my Level 2 Gym Instructor Course and my Level 3 Personal Trainer course with CMS Fitness Courses was outstanding.  My tutor Hadyn was so knowledgeable and the regular meetings I had with him were always informative and constructive.  We would talk through anything I didn’t understand and discuss the next section of the course.  Hadyn is brilliant at explaining things in ways that made some things easier to fathom.  The course is in-depth and thorough and the learning resources provided are easy to access and full of information and insight.

The career guidance and information was really informative and this along with the Business section of the course was invaluable.  This part of the course is as important as the rest as it makes you think realistically about how you will market yourself and the cost implications of starting out.  All very thought-provoking.
