What Is a Great Destination for Intermediate Skiing? A Perfect "10": On-Piste, Off the Beaten Path
Living too far south for a lot of snow and working too many hours to get away often, I’m an “intermittent intermediate” with no hope for improvement. The biggest challenge is finding a destination that is difficult enough to be interesting but easy enough to ski when traveling solo. Since the difficulty level classification of a run varies from mountain to mountain, I too often find that it doesn’t work for me. The difference between skiing Heavenly Valley of Lake Tahoe and Sun Valley or Big Sky was particularly surprising. In the American Northwest where the intermediate slopes resembled the Matterhorn, I had to switch to plan B: count the bison in Yellowstone. After such near misses, I developed a personal checklist for finding the best destinations for intermediate skiing:
- Number and type of runways designated as intermediate
- Snow quality and typical conditions
- After-ski activity/restaurants and accommodation nearby
- Affordability/Attractive prices
- Convenient access to airports
- Friendly environment
- Interesting/different location but doable
- Ski lessons availability/schedule
- Mountain weather/temperature
- Proximity to a plan B/alternative tourism
Preferring the road less travelled, I sampled an active volcano, New Zealand’s Ruapehu/Whakapapa. Living north of the equator, I was especially excited to ski this summer. Also, with the mild climate of the North Island, I was able to raft one day and ski on this active volcano the next. On later trips to other trails, wearing a sweater with a Kiwi on skis was a great icebreaker.
Continued to Hafjel, Norway, which had all the good benefits, even when traveling alone. The snow was fantastic although it was 50 degrees Fahrenheit at the base. The Ski Lessons were excellent and the lessons friendly. The price was right and a local bus transported skiers throughout the day from Lillehammer. Even better, sending postcards home from that Olympic venue gave my skiing abilities an undeserved boost that I could dine on for the rest of the year. If only my luggage had arrived when I did it would have been perfect.
Still struggling at times to keep up with the best skiers, I finally hit solid ground. I found the perfect “10” ski in Andorra. I was immediately excited to see a new, albeit rather small, country based in the Pyrenees. The mixture of four languages, Spanish, Catalan, French and English, made it exotic but still easy going. The ski lessons were very helpful with a small group of well matched intermediates. It was a really friendly atmosphere with part of the class practicing English and the others Spanish. After lunch, a Dutch classmate and I spent the afternoon working on perfecting our parallel turns.
Every day the sun was shining. Even at low altitude there was no ice. The local villages offered multiple apres ski and dinner options at a good price. Finally, access was easy in Barcelona. The February weather in northeast Spain was temperate, much like California. This made it an ideal way to combine an active outdoor trip with a cultural trip admiring Gaudi’s amazing architecture.
If I can’t get a perfect “10”, I opt to find a destination off the beaten path. Whatever the skiing conditions, I can always savor the adventure and have the photos to prove it.
