A New Breed of Camcorders Hits the Market

Cameras that can record have been around for a while. They started out as a Super-8 camera that you could create grainy, choppy, silent movies with. This progressed in the 80s with the creation of VHS and 8mm video cameras. While these types of cameras were cutting edge in the 80s, they are now relics of an old age. The new era of camcorders is dominated by digital camcorders. These new cameras now record crisp, clear digital images and the picture is even better in the high definition models. The price of these digital camcorders ranges from around $700 to $1500.

They take video footage the same way, except they are recorded in a digital format rather than on VHS or BETA tapes. The ease of editing these videos is amazing since they can be downloaded to a personal computer. Now you can add titles, transitions and soundtracks. These can then be sent over the Internet, saved to a hard drive or burned to a DVD. The results are much more pleasing to the eye.

There are many digital camcorder format options: DV (digital video), Digital8 and DVD. DV camcorders use Mini-DV type media to record. This is basically DVD quality video (720 x 480 pixel resolution). DV type camcorders are the most common type of digital camcorder. The only problem is that each tape can only handle about an hour of video.

The Digital8 are a throwback to Hi8 camcorders. These types of recorders can play old 8mm and Hi8 tapes and newer Digital8 tapes. These are harder to find but are capable of recording longer videos. Newer DVD camcorders allow you to edit on the machine rather than having to download the material to a PC. Video quality is not as good as DV or Digital8.

DV and Digital8 recorders use FireWire or IEEE-1394 to connect to a PC for downloading. You can download the video directly from the machine to your PC. Once there, you can do all the editing you like, but be aware that videos take a lot of memory to store. Editing material is simple. If you know how to cut and paste in a word processor, you can edit video on a computer. When you are done editing your material, you can send it back to the recorder or you can copy it to a DVD. Make sure your player has DVD recording capabilities.
