3-D Effects Take Audience on a Journey to the Center of the Earth (Movie Review)

Eric Brevig’s first major film project, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D isn’t the most innovative storyline or the most jaw-dropping acting, but the 3D special effects it brings to the screen are so spectacular that the plot and decent cast are hoisted above the rest. mediocrity to make this new take on Verne’s entertaining and thrilling classic.

Brevig isn’t new to filmmaking although this is his first mainstream showing with his name high on the director’s list. He took unit director roles on films such as Shaymaylan’s The village and the recent version of wild west wild with Will Smith. Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is not a simple unfolding of Verne’s story, so the direction also had to take a new approach. Brevig didn’t have much to work with, but he had enough to allow him to make the film a success.

The main cast was pretty good, Brendan Fraser being the “big” name, and they accomplished what they had to; this propels the story forward to make room for the special effects. There really isn’t much to say about the acting. It’s sufficient and quite convincing for what it is. The writing is sometimes superficial and what do most viewers expect? Nothing more, I guess. Most people are there to see things deep and jump out of their seats when objects and creatures pop off the screen!

With that in mind, no one will be disappointed with this film. Typical and expected 3D effects are used and many simple objects typically overlooked in film are given new attention through cinematic choices that enhance the 3D feel of the film. The film uses the latest polarized lens technique to make the illusion work and as long as the film is sharp it works wonderfully! Magical landscapes, unknown beasts, drastic and sudden movements, even some classic fair-ride type thrills are added just to keep the third dimension at the forefront of viewers’ minds. No time to worry about suspension of disbelief in this movie: the plot, the writing, and the acting are all secondary to the optical delight that awaits audiences. Even most of the trailers were in 3D, probably to prep you for the movie as much as to show off the effects of other 3D movies to come.

Globally, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is fun and exciting for everyone. Nothing too ridiculously scary or violent, yet still retains the chills, thrills and spills one hopes for in a good 3D movie. The effect has come a long way since the original version of The mask and The Thirteen Ghosts, Gorilla on the looseand the Movie Kikaida. Science at work, boys and girls, and that means fun galore! Well done, Brevig! Journey worth experiencing on the big screen!
