Many people are put off by the thought of trying to edit videos, let alone accept the most complicated features of programs. But if you keep it simple and take it step by step, you can have a lot of fun and produce something reasonably good.
Internet marketing, affiliate sales, and many other businesses can benefit from video content. This works in two ways: one is that Google loves video content and owns YouTube, so websites with good visual content like this usually rank higher. The other is that people often enjoy seeing and hearing people deliver a message over video, they are used to the format.
Once you have a camera and start filming, you will be happy to know that Windows Movie Maker is included in all Microsoft operating system bundles. iMovie is great too, but I don’t know much about that program, but it’s what you need if you have a Mac.
One way to solve many video problems in advance is to download DVD Video Soft freeware. This is a fantastic bundle of about 40 programs that are completely free, spyware-free, and without obligations, let alone the nasty efforts to register for other things before you can use the program. And there’s no period you can use it before you have to buy it, no “watermarks” embedded in the images. When installing it, remember to deny the toolbar it wants you to allow and then install it.
The reason you need this set of programs is file conversion, an essential capability if you plan to edit different types of footage from different brands of cameras. The Sony 30GB HDD camera I use creates files that Windows Movie Maker can use immediately, but my Cisco Flip camera footage needs to be converted. Also, WMM does not work with the DVD format, which also needs to be converted. AVI is the WMM reference format and many other editing programs prefer to work with it.
You connect your camera to the computer, usually through a USB port, although some older Panasonics go through a 1394 firewire connection, which not all computers have, especially newer ones. If your camera has the firewire requirement, only buy a computer with that type of socket, or be prepared to buy a box that converts firewire to usb, and more complexities.
Once the footage is in the computer, go to “import video” in the upper left panel. If it doesn’t matter, it tells you right away. Then you need to convert with DVD Video Soft, although you may not need to do this if you know how to add file formats with one of WMM’s options. But I found it a bit cumbersome, and actually able to crash the program. I’m not sure what happened, it could have been my computer or some other variable.
Once I found DVD Video Soft, I could just quickly convert footage without worrying about WMM’s control panel. For example, if you have one of the flip cameras that saves the footage in MP4 format, you just need to open the FREE 3GP video converter. This is a mobile phone image format that is apparently designed for the many file types that appear in this world, but works great in WMM.
Find the files you want to convert, then highlight them all. Tip: If you click on the first file, then find the last file in the batch and click on that while holding the “shift” key, it will highlight all the files in between. Then import them into the program.
Go down and leave the setting on “High Quality”, and look to the left, where a small black triangle is in a window under the word “Formats”. When you click on it, you get a menu with a number of options, you want AVI as the conversion format, WMM can use that one best.
Once you have everything set, click “Convert” and wait a few minutes, it’s quite fast, depending on how many files you have. When it’s done, click the folder on the right, and you’ll be in the 3GP output folder. I always copy the files I just converted and put them in their own folder on the desktop, or somewhere else where you can easily find them. For some reason WMM doesn’t like importing directly from this folder, it’s much easier from the desktop.
If you want to convert DVD to AVI, use the FREE DVD converter option in the control panel. Make sure the output format is AVI and also don’t use “Perfect” quality; instead, use the next option below, “High” quality. I tried Perfect once, and it worked for hours and hours and still wasn’t finished. In most cases, high quality is fine and converts in a relatively short time.
I actually fixed the errors of the files by running them through the 3GP format option, it can work like magic on some files that won’t play or import in WMM.
