Old-Fashioned Dark Comedy Fun With a Kick – And the Next Great Dog Star Introduced!

I admit, I’m a fan of David Hewlett (“McKay” is one of my favorite characters of all time), so I’m a Stargateophile (gatephiliac?) and a pretty serious fanatic, however, I don’t like not automatically and blindly ” ” just because it’s attached to Stargate, whether it’s SG-1 or Atlantis. I like to think that I have an independent spirit to some degree.

A dog’s breakfast sounded like a cute project, and I enjoyed reading the Hewlett dgeek.com blog and watching the squirrels (its self-proclaimed fans) spin an ever-widening and impressive marketing buzz like never seen before. And yes, I follow dhewlett on Twitter. But I still reserved my review until I could see the movie.

I love goofy old comedies, Cary Grant, Tracy & Hepburn, and I loved Inspector Clouseau by Peter Seller. These are comparisons that Hewlett made for his movie, and it caught my interest on a non-sci-fi level (spoken with respect).

So when I put this little indie movie on my DVD and started watching it, several things happened.

1) I fell in love with Mars the dog, totally and completely!

2) I loved Kate Hewlett (even though she had already won me over in “McKay and Mrs. Miller” (Atlantis reference))

3) I found Paul McGillion to be hilarious

4) I tried to imitate Chris Judge’s fantastic facial expressions, and

5) I totally loved the goofy, far-fetched and often very clever movie

Beast? Oh yeah. Awkward? Certainly. On top? You bet. But, there was also this core of sweetness (not sloppy, yucky, sticky sweetness, but good, warm, real sweetness), a warmth running through him that was subtle and unmistakable.

The behind-the-scenes segments and features of the DVD opened up the “inner circle” of Dog’s Breakfast to me, so that I felt like I was part of the movie and let the inside jokes slip by, which doesn’t isn’t just a clever marketing angle, but it also increased my enjoyment and gave me a real connection to the crew and the film…and had me salivating (my tribute to Mars) in anticipation of their next film.

End result: fun movie with lots of energy, nice subtle but warm “morale”, laughs galore, a few groans of fake agony as he passed here and there, and I smiled, giggled and laughed out loud at through the full movie. And I wanted an autographed photo of Mars in the worst possible way!
