How to Build a Shelving Unit Under a Wall-Mounted Flat Screen TV
There’s no denying that your new TV looks great hanging from wall brackets in your living room. You clearly made the right decision choosing a TV stand over a stand.
But if there’s one thing to be said against flat screen stands, it’s that they don’t come with a place to put electronics. This means you may find yourself without a convenient way to store your Xbox 360 or DVD player close enough to the TV for cables to reach. A simple solution to this problem is to install shelves under the TV.
If you’re comfortable taking on DIY projects, building your own shelving unit can save you a lot of money over commercially made products. Shelving under flat screen stands can be as basic or as complex as you want, making it easy to tailor the project to your skill level. Tools and Materials Required

1. Find the anchor stud(s).Use the stud finder to locate the stud(s) that will hold the shelving bracket in place. In most cases, a single track standard will be affixed to the same stud as your TV mount wall brackets. For a standard dual track you will want to use the studs to the left and right of whoever is holding the TV. Mark the amount(s) with the pencil.
2. Determine the installation height of the top shelf.It is very important to get a good measurement here. If you install the shelf too close to the bottom of your TV, you won’t have enough space for your electronics. If you leave too much space between the shelf and the TV wall brackets, the whole unit may look a little weird or unbalanced. Use the tape measure and pencil for this step, and be sure to account for the height of your electronics and the thickness of your wood planks. Also be aware that tilting flat panel mounts allow the TV to tilt forward about 15 or 20 degrees, which could affect your measurements.
3. Install shelf bracket(s) and brackets. Using your electric drill, attach the top of the single or double track shelf uprights to the locations identified in the previous step. Before fully tightening each screw, be sure to check the vertical straightness of the standard with your level. Once the uprights are in place, hang the shelf brackets in the desired locations. A double track shelf standard will also need to be checked for horizontal straightness from bracket to bracket.
4. Install the shelves. Use the screwdriver and wood screws to attach each wooden board to the brackets. Check that the shelves are in place before loading them with your electronic components.
