Demon Tree

The cotton candy colored glow of the sun setting in the horizon was enough to stop Maggie Denno clean in her tracks. She studied the gorgeous hue as she pulled out her cell phone to snap a picture. As she did, she noticed the unusual shape of the Tree that stood in her way. Funny, how she had never noticed it before with its branches spread out like wings and smaller twigs curving and twisting like the old fingers of a witch. She stepped a little bit closer and felt an electric vibration pulse through her body. Not a hard shock, but a wave that was almost pleasurable.

She stepped even closer, examining the smaller tendrils of branches moving in the wind almost beckoning to her to continue her steps. As she neared the trunk, the air grew thick around her and she could feel it in her lungs like the threads of cotton. Stopping to take a breath, she inhaled deeply through her nose. She realized that she should have smelt the beautiful flowers of the cherry tree blossoming nearby but instead the stench of death invaded her nose.

Opening her eyes and seeing the body before her made her drop to her knees and convulse violently into the rosemary bushes. She wiped the corner of her mouth as she stood then dialed 911.

“911 emergency operator,” a woman’s voice on the other end of the phone answered.

“I…I found a dead body,” Maggie cried into the phone.

“Are you in danger, ma’am?”

“No, no I’m not. I don’t think so. I don’t know.”

Maggie Looked around her surroundings and didn’t see anyone. People normally weren’t out at this hour on a Sunday. They would be eating dinner with their families or at church.

“Maggie, where are you right now?”

“I’m on Filmore Street next to the bus stop by the 7-11,” she looked at the body again and wanted to concentrate on something else. “Do I have to stay here?”

“Maggie, if you feel you are in danger then you should leave. If you are fine staying there it will be easier for the police to see where you and the body are located. Is the body in plain sight?”

“No, no it’s in the bushes,” she said, taking her eyes away from the body and back to the tree which seemed to be moving now. Now the tree looked even more like a bat as the sun began falling in the horizon. It would be dark soon and she really did not want to stay there any longer especially now little leathery leaves (of skin?) were growing between the smaller branches. The two branches pointed up from the top of its head looked like the long, twisted horns of a goat. One branch looked like the long snout of a wolf. As two orbs of red blinked at her from the front of the tree above the snout, Maggie screamed.

“Maggie, Maggie! Are you all right?”

She could hear the woman on the other end, but she was too scared to speak. She felt one of the branches circle around her waist and pull her close to the trunk and as she was pulled forward, her phone fell to the cement sidewalk and smashed into pieces.
