How To Create a Google Ads Display Campaign In 2022

Google Ads (formerly known as Google AdWords) is a great Pay per click marketing channel to achieve your advertising goals. Utilizing the tool correctly can give your business the growth you are expecting.

With the passing of time, Google is making massive changes and adding new features to Google Ads to help marketers and businesses in achieving the right results. But this sometimes becomes challenging for marketers. If you are somebody who has been working on Google Ads for 5 years, you may be able to better tell the changes Google has implemented on the platform so far.

Now, we are in 2022 and the Google Ads interface has changed a lot in the past few years. Considering this scenario, the way we create a Display Campaign has also drastically changed. And if you are a beginner, this guide should be the one to help you launch your first Google Display Campaign.

7 Steps to Create a Google Ads Display Campaign:

1. Create A New Campaign

Login to Google Ads and click on “Campaigns” from the left navigation bar:

Upon clicking, you will see a dashboard with the list of campaigns that are currently in the run, paused, or removed. In case the account is new you will see a message as “Create A New Campaign”.

Now, click on the blue “+” sign and choose “New Campaign” as the first step as shown below:

2. Choose The Campaign Objective & Conversion Goals

Once you click on “New Campaign” a new window appears to help you choose your objective. In this case, we are going to choose “Website Traffic” as the campaign objective:

Once you select your campaign objective, a new window appears below to help you choose the conversion goals for your campaign. A conversion is a pageview or an action you want the users to take once they click and visit your website. Since in this example, “Website traffic” is our objective, we are going to track the “Pageviews” as a conversion for this campaign.

Before you launch a campaign, make sure you have your event tracking/conversion tracking set up in place. In this example below, we have kept “Pageview” as the conversion goal. In case there are more conversion goals, you can remove them from the list and click “Continue”.

3. Select Campaign Type and Subtype

Once you click “continue”, a window appears with different types of campaigns Google Ads currently offers. Select “Display” from the different options available.

  • Choose Subtype – Upon choosing “Display”, a window appears below to choose your campaign subtype, add the website URL and name your campaign. In this example, we are going to create a “Standard Display Campaign”.
  • Add URL – Here, the website URL is going to be the page you are trying to drive the traffic to. It could be your home page or any other page you direct the traffic to.
  • Campaign Name – In this example, we are going to name the campaign “Example Display Campaign”. You can of course go ahead and rename it. Click “Continue”.

4. Location & Language

As part of this step, we will specify the locations where we would like our ads to show up. According to your campaign objective, specify the right cities, states, regions, or countries you wish to target. To specify states or cities, choose “Enter another location” and you will be able to find the locations you wish to target. And the language by default is “English”. Click “Next”.

5. Budget and Bidding Strategy

A crucial step to complete – choosing the budget and the right bidding strategy for your campaign. In the budget field, specify the daily budget for your campaign. The daily budget amounts to the total budget you want to spend in a month. Once the daily budget is exhausted, the ads for the day do not show on Google, hence you won’t exceed your monthly budget.

Next is the bidding strategy. Here, we will specify the strategy according to the campaign goal and type. Here are the different bidding strategies you can choose from. Since it’s a Traffic Display campaign, we are going to choose “Maximize Clicks” as the bidding strategy. Once done, click “Next”.

6. Create Ads

In this step, we will create an ad by adding all the assets it needs. Here’s what you need to complete the ad:

  • Website URL
  • Business Name
  • Images for Display Ads – Square & Landscape
  • A Business logo
  • A Video (optional) that is uploaded on YouTube.
  • 5 Headlines with a character limit of 30 each.
  • A long headline with a character limit of 90 each.
  • 5 descriptions for a character limit of 90 each.

Once done click “next”.

7. Publish Campaign

Once you click “Next”, you will be taken to a window that shows the Campaign Overview. Take a look to verify whether all the settings meet your campaign goals. If you’d like to make the changes, go back to the respective step and make desired changes. Once you are done, click “Publish Campaign”. Voila!

How easy was that? Launching a campaign on Google Ads is not that hard anyway.
