Galle is a beautiful city south of Colombo, on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. The city was established during the 16th century by the Portuguese colonies. So, yes, it can give you some really real colonial-era vibes. The aesthetics do not stop here. As the city saw a change in rule from time and again, giving it a mix of Dutch and British rule. The city justly demonstrates interaction and coordination between Portuguese architectural style and the local traditions of Southeast Asia.

Best time to travel

Well, Galle is on the Indian Ocean coast and is a coastal city, so it is obvious that it sees wind and humidity quite a lot. However, the time between December to April is the best time to plan a trip to Galle and Sri Lanka in general. As the weather will be much better and you won’t face uneasy rain from time to time to ruin your plans.  However, this does not mean that you cannot visit the place in other months. The county and the city still have a lot to offer during the not-so-best months.

You’ll love Galle if…

  1. You are a history buff
  2. You like being near the water
  3. You’re interested in Portuguese and Dutch architecture
  4. You want to witness the influence of colonialism
