This Artist Has Created The Japanese Version Of Our Favourite Memes!

If you thought memes couldn’t get any better, we have news for you! There exists a famous Japanese art version of our favourite ones and it’s beautiful, hilarious and astonishing – all at the same time! Griffin Waldau from Seattle, USA specialises in giving us joy by creating Ukiyo-e counterparts of the laughter-inducers!

What is Ukiyo-e, exactly?

Ukiyo-e is Japanese for “pictures of the floating world”, and is a really important art genre in Japan. In fact, from the years 1603 to 1867(the Tokugawa period), Ukiyo-e was regarded as the most important art movement in the land of anime.

The Ukiyo-e is famous for its amalgamation of realism and frivolity. The realism is in part native, and in part foreign.

Even though the common subjects back then included life at the ‘entertainment centres’, prostitutes and courtesans, our artist in light is doing something different!

When it came to wood-block printing, Ukiyo-e artists became more democratic in their approach. They would embrace the everyday life and try to capture it. This enabled the mass-consumption of Ukiyo-e pieces and helped in its development.

What does this particular artist do?

Needless to say, our highlighted creator loves memes! This is exactly why they’ve improvised the art of Ukiyo-e to suit their preference and turned world famous memes and meme-caricatures into these Japanese art pieces.

Cats are the best part! Ukiyo-e cats are fierce yet gentle, and devastatingly cute!
