Our idea of ‘culture’ in 2005 was spending endless hours in front of the TV watching Disney Channel, reading Harry Potter, while wearing butterfly clips and thick lip gloss. I wouldn’t mind going back. I remember watching the O.C. and Lindsay Lohan’s face was ubiquitous. I remember the 2000s Fashion treating most of us with iPods, YouTube, and oh, before I forget, the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. I grew up watching Adam Sandler films, and the Harry Potter series was my bible. I remember Regina George (Rachel McAdams, the supreme) and I remember Hurricane Katrina. I remember text messaging my friends and spending time on my phone trying to settle with Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” or Greenday’s “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”.

Music played a huge role for me in the 2000s. The idea of romantic love affairs existed only between fictional characters like Hailey and Nathan Scott from One Tree Hill, and life wasn’t easy for Ryan from The O.C. but we all know how it all changed for him. Those days were carefree. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, N-Sync, Alicia Silverstone’s iconic performance in Clueless, the Lord Of the Rings trilogy – these don’t constitute even 1/10th of the whole party (yes, feels like a party now) and, I can go on. 

Fashion was radical, experimental, outrageous. I remember being 13 and wanting piercings and tattoos. At 13, I was an “emo-kid”, and that phase didn’t last very long (thank the forces for that), but I wasn’t headed for anything better than that. I turned to stripes and checkered sweaters and knee-length boots. On other days I went for the waist chains and low-waist Jeans. Simple times, headbanging to Linkin Park’s “the end’, the 2000s departed. 

But, if I was watching Disney Channel, I was also watching Pauly D, Vinny, Mike in the Jersey Shore. That was some absurd content, but I liked it. I remember watching it at night when everyone at home was asleep. Well, you know what I’m talking about. But if there are two things I can’t in good conscience defend are Jersey Shore and the (questionable) fashion trends I stuck to. Worse than Lindsay Lohan’s mugshot, trust me. 

Jeans with no pockets

 Let’s address this- How were major celebrities managing without jeans pockets? Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Beyonce have all worn it one time or another and we don’t know what to gather from it! Denim has changed dramatically over the years and we’re all happy to be able to slide in our phones and earphones in our jeans pockets!

Capris 

 All of us, at some point in our lives have had the chance, the “great fortune” to wear this piece of clothing. I don’t understand the point of it. I mean, why cut out a portion of your Chinos? Would it make a difference? Back then, it did. But, we’re happy to break up with you, and we’ve happily moved on. 

Dresses over Jeans

 Major celebrities like Alicia Silverstone, Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, and many more- appeared wearing a dress over jeans..? Now, what were we thinking? Oh wait, none of us were thinking. It was one of the worst crossovers ever. Wear a dress and wear your jeans – not together, separately. Yes, we missed keywords like “separately” here. This fashion trend is long forgotten and gone for good. 

Chunky beaded necklaces and bracelets

 This particular fashion trend was suffocatingly omnipresent. We would pick out the chunkiest neckpiece to go with our white basic tank tops and denim? I mean, why? There was no room for minimalism. We had to go the extra mile to “feel it up!” The bracelets were an unnecessary addition, but fashion needed to be eccentric then. “More” was always in vogue. 

The Juicy Couture and the “Shipwrecked look”

 I decided to club these two for the Ultimate 5th worst fashion trend. LiLo, JLo, Britney Spears have all had “Juicy” pasted on their bodies. Now, in my honest opinion, this truly wasn’t chic. It made no sense whatsoever. But, something that didn’t add up and was worse than the “Juice” was the Shipwrecked look. Many celebrities have conveniently donned this “look” at major events. Why would one intentionally do this to themselves? Well, red carpet looks have leveled up. But let’s not forget to shed a tear for all the wrecked pirates. Good riddance!

We have been there and done almost all of this and I love almost everything about the 2000s. The lip gloss tops the list for me. I apply several coats of my favorite berry flavored lip gloss every time I step out. Plus, it’s safe to believe that fashion has come ahead but several trends have revisited and are staying for the next few years.
