Here’s How You Can Be Sure Your Beauty Products Are 100% Vegan

Going Vegan is slowly becoming a global movement be it in food, fashion or cosmetics. It is safe for your skin and hair and is usually chemical-free. Vegan products are known to be cruelty-free and don’t include anything taken animals and are not tested on them either.

We all should use natural and organic products that are vegan as they are environmentally conscious products and are good for the skin and hair without any harmful effects. A lot of products claim to be vegan but they include some products that may be natural but are not completely vegan.

Here’s a list of ingredients commonly found in makeup that are not vegan.

  1. 1 Beeswax or Cera Lava


    This is a natural product Extracted from the hives of honey bees. Bees consume around six pounds of honey to produce one pound of wax. It is formed under the abdomen and is secreted as drops of wax as scales. It is usually used to make lipsticks and other makeup products like eye shadow and blush.

  2. 2 Collagen


    It is produced in animals and is extracted from the skin and bones of dead animals. It is found in the skin of animals. This is usually used in body lotions so be sure to check for it. 

  3. 3 Keratin


    Keratin is usually found in hair products. It is usually extracted from horns, grills, feathers, and hair of animals. Almond oil and soy protein are the vegan alternatives so be sure to check what has been used in your hair product.

  4. 4 Glycerin


    Glycerin is animal fat and used in a lot of cosmetic products like lotions, balms, soaps, and toothpaste. Some products use the vegetable oil glycerin as the Vegan alternative. So do check if your product contains glycerin.

  5. 5 Squalene


    Squalene is an ingredient usually extracted from sharks. It is a liver oil extract used mostly in deodorants, lip balms, and moisturizers. It is a powerful anti-aging ingredient. This can also be obtained from wheat germ and olives. So check if the squalene is vegan or not.

  6. 6 Oleic Acid


    This is an ingredient that is obtained from animal fat. It works as a softening and conditioning element in nail paints, moisturizers, soap, and make-up. It can be extracted from plant sources like olives, nuts, and coconut. So check if it is vegan or not.

  7. 7 Carmine or Cochineal or Carminic Acid


    Carmines is used to add a red pigment to your lipsticks and blush. It is made by crushing female cochineal a kind of beetles. As per PETA reports around 70,000 beetles need to be crushed to get 1 pound of the red dye!

  8. 8 Lanolin


    Lanolin is another ingredient that you should check for. It is extracted from the oil glands of sheep. It is used in a lot of products like lip glosses, lip balms, and some hair products. It has a moisturizing effect. Synthetic lanolin is available but that is extracted from sheep hair as well. You can use plant oil, like coconut oil or olive oil based products or shea butter and coconut butter.


    There are other such ingredients that are used for cosmetic products. Always check the ingredients and search their details online if you have any doubts.
