Spreepark has been closed since the past 10 years. Formerly known as Kulturpark Plänterwald, the park was originally opened to the public in 1969 and stayed open for 20 years. At that time it was the only amusement park in Germany.

The Spreepark Berlin GMBH company won the contract for managing the park in 1991. They added some new attractions to the park. The entry fee was changed, a water landscape was added and several changes were made to the park. Roller coasters, and an English village and a Western town were added to the park. Inspire of these efforts the park lost its lustre, due to many reasons like a rise in fees and no adequate parking space.

The park was shut down in 2002 and the owner Norbert With was charged with smuggling. He was later sentenced to jail for seven years on charges of attempting to smuggle cocaine from Peru to Germany through his Flying carpet equipment. After his jail term, he moved to Peru and the park was left abandoned.

The park in its ruins still attracts tourists and visitors. The overgrown greenery makes the park even more beautiful and the perfect place for photo ops. The Ferris wheel is even visible from the outside if you do not want to step in the park. It has also been used as a perfect location in the movie Hanna. All aside we think the park is creepy and sordid enough to be the set of a horror movie.

PS: Don’t freak out if you see the Ferris wheel moving; it’s just the wind.
