Conceptual art emphasizes the basic concept or idea behind a piece above any considerations of traditional artistic constraints. It began as an art trend in the 1960s, and the word typically refers to work created between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s. This art form t is still very popular to this day. Conceptualists use many mediums and materials, as well as a wide range of ordinary items and 'ready-made objects' to create finished art pieces that focus on 'ideas and purposes' rather than the “work of art” itself.

The question of creative ability is a key distinction between conceptual art and more "conventional" types of art-making. Although expertise in the use of traditional media frequently plays a little part in conceptual art, it is impossible to claim that conceptual works always lack talent or that skill is not necessary to create them.
