Pankaj Kapur  is an Indian actor in theater, television and film. He is the father of actor Shahid Kapoor with his first wife, Neelima Azeem. He has appeared in several television series and movies. His most acclaimed film roles to date have been those of Inspector PK in Raakh (1989), Dr. Dipankar Roy in Ek Doctor Ki Maut (1991) and Abba Ji, (based on Shakespeare's King Duncan) in Macbeth's adaptation by Vishal Bhardwaj; Maqbool (2003), the three roles that earned him the National Film Awards.

Career

After graduating from the National Theater School, he did theater for the next four years, until Richard Attenborough offered him a role in Gandhi. Over the years, as a director, he has played more than 74 plays and soap operas, including Mohandas B.A.L.L.B., Wah Bhai Wah, Sahabji Biwiji Ghulamji and Drishtanth, Kanak Di Balli, Albert's Bridge and Panchvan Savaar.

He made his film debut with the movie Arohan by Shyam Benegal (1982). Subsequently, he played Pyarelal, second secretary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi in 1982. Later, he sang for Ben Kingsley in the Hindi version of the film.

In 2003, he appeared in Maqbool, the adaptation of Macbeth of Shakespeare by Vishal Bhardwaj. His antagonistic performance as a short-haired, short-legged and short-legged Abaji at Maqbool earned him the 2004 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
