His domination of the film scene in the 1970s and 1980s was such that the French director François Truffaut called it "a united industry"

Early and personal life

Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in north-central India. His ancestors on his father's side came from a village called Babupatti, in Tehsil of Raniganj, in the district of Pratapgarh, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known Hindu dialect, a Hindu, while his mother, Teji Bachchan, was Sikh. Bachchan was originally named Inquilaab, inspired by the term Inquilab Zindabad popularly used during the struggle for Indian independence. In English, Inquilab Zindabad means "Long live the revolution". However, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant, Harivansh Rai changed the boy's name to Amitabh, which, according to an article in the Times of India, means "the light that will never die". Shrivastava, Amitabh's father had adopted the pen name Bachchan ("child-like" in Hindi colloquial), under which he published all his works. It is with this name that Amitabh made his film debut and for all other practical purposes, Bachchan became the surname of his entire immediate family. Bachchan's father died in 2003, and his mother in 2007.
Bachchan is a former student of Sherwood College, Nainital. He then attended the Kirori Mal College of Delhi University. He has a younger brother, Ajitabh. Her mother was very interested in the theater and was offered a role in a feature film, but she preferred her domestic chores. Teji has had some influence on Amitabh Bachchan's career choice because she has always insisted that he should "take center stage"
Bachchan is married to actress Jaya Bhaduri. The couple has two children, Shweta Bachchan (later after marriage, known as Shweta Nanda wife of businessman Nikhil Nanda) and Abhishek Bachchan (actor and husband of actress Aishwarya Rai).
