They beautify and enhance looks with brushes and strokes. There is no limit that a makeup artist cannot touch. With Bollywood reaching great height, its makeup artists must be given due credit because they are always equally responsible in bringing a character to life along with the actors and the Director. Makeup artist Adrian Jacobs is a famous name in the Cinema industry. He is also a well-known figure in makeup stores like ‘Nykaa’. Apart from that, he is also known as a promising bridal makeup artist. He has worked as a makeup artist in blockbusters and hits like ‘Dabangg’, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ and ‘Bareilly ki Barfi’.

Adrian spoke to HotFridayTalks.com and shared some valuable inputs about his career. Adrian explained how his circumstances eventually led him to become a makeup artist, “I worked as a cabin attendant initially. During the time of recession in India, I lost my job. Then with whatever savings I had, I did a course in make-up. I took up the course just because I had lost my job and was exploring opportunities. However, I did not ever have in mind any such aim of becoming a make-up artist.” He added, “I did the course out of no choice and just gave it a go to see how it comes out to be. And slowly I started liking it so much; it was so much enjoying that I thought I can actually go ahead with this as a profession.” Adrian adds that since his mother was also a hairstylist in the industry, he was triggered into choosing a similar profession.

After speaking to Adrian, we got to know about the struggles that he underwent during the entire procedure of becoming a successful makeup artist, and his teaming up with hairstylist Aasif Ahmed. “I had been struggling to get make-up jobs initially. Aasif had been in the marketing department of UTV and we met through friends. We had very little money, as none of us came from very influential backgrounds. We started to understand the industry gradually. Aasif was more inclined towards it, because he knew the business as he had already worked with a movie production house and had dealt with hair and makeup professionals of actors before. So, he kind of had an idea about the techniques and how the business actually could be run.”
“We started off with zero. We were good friends, and we got along really well. He was more inclined towards hair styling and when I became a makeup artist he saw my work and liked it. We then started off as an experiment, with whatever little funds we had.” Adrian stated that luckily, Aasif and he started receiving job offers from the first year itself. Those times were tough, but these experiences inspired Adrian and helped him become what he is today.

For the youngsters who are awaiting their careers in the makeup industry, Adrian has some good words for them, “I would say there are very good and cooperative people in the industry if you look for them. It may be challenging at times, nevertheless, it is a very exciting job as well. Don’t listen to people who try to demotivate you saying it is very difficult and a very competitive field. Trust me, we started off with nothing, and now we’ve got success! So, if you really want to do it, do it with all your heart and be properly informed. People will always be there to give their opinions, but as per my experience, it is an easy place to be if you are really good at your job. And its really fun to be here.” Adrian also added that if you want, you could easily pursue this as a full time job! There a day offs as well, and it isn’t as burdensome as most other jobs since you are your own boss.

“Although today we look at this very differently, 10-12 years ago, people did not look at being a makeup artist as a full time career, it was only considered as a part-time job,” Adrian said and this and we agree.
But, the achievements that Adrian has in his name are commendable. We wish him more success and luck for his remaining career!
