Are You In An Office WhatsApp Group? Then Read This

Once you’ve been added to your Office Whatsapp group, there’s no getting out of it, unless you’re, well, out of the office for good.

If you’re planning to stick around and save your spot in this organization, and save your sanity too, here are some things you need to clearly remember before typing out anything in the office Whatsapp group chat.

It’s Okay To Go Mute

Turn on the mute button to avoid incessant notifications. When you’re working, the constant stream of messages can divert your attention. Switch to the desktop feature for WhatsApp so that you don’t have to keep checking your phone and can also revert without leaving your computer.

It’s An Office Thing

No matter how pally you are with your colleagues, maintain the decorum. Don’t behave in the group in a way that you wouldn’t do in person when you’re in office. If you’re really friends, message them on personal chat and keep it off the group.

Make sure to limit the communication and not get too personal

“I don’t share any official or professional communication via WhatsApp. WhatsApp is for your personal use, and not for sharing important official documents. Hence, even if you’re in any office WhatsApp group, limit the communication to wishing each other on festivals or on their success in professional life. You can share a few things on the group that are not too casual, and definitely not very official, as that is best discussed in a more professional and formal way,” says Ameya Udare, senior manager in product development at IDFC.

Keep Your Private Time For Yourself

If you’re always replying at any time of the day or night, you’re basically setting yourself up for disaster. Once you’re done with office, you’re not obliged to respond to the messages, unless you want to set it as a pattern. Make it clear that you’re there when needed, but that doesn’t mean you’ll give up your personal time.

Don’t Get Personal

Everything you share on the chat will remain for all to see. Refrain from passing any personal or judgmental comments, and don’t try to gain brownie points by sucking up to the bosses in the group.

It’s definitely a thin line balancing your office WhatsApp group and your personal life, but if done the right way, you can avoid offending someone, and keep your peace.
