Rajkummar Rao Does Not Believe In Ghosts

His next Film, Stree releases on his birthday; 31 August and Rajkummar Rao is clearly very excited about it. This brilliant actor is everyone’s favorite but he is one of those who doesn’t let success get into his head and that’s probably why he is so good at what he does and loved by all. In a conversation with HotFridayTalks.com, Rajkummar tells us about his upcoming film Stree and more.

EXCERPTS

Does the failure of any of your films make you nervous or does it affect your state of mind?
I am in a very happy mood and I am looking forward to Stree. I gave my heart to Fanney and I did my part sincerely, the rest is beyond my control. I don’t decide on the script depending on the box office. That uncertainty about how people will react to the movie is fascinating. I am happy and enthusiastic about every film of mine.

Tell us more about your role in Stree
Stree is an entertaining film with an interesting content and for me playing this role will be different because I have never done a horror comedy. My character Vicky is a small-town guy who feels he doesn’t belong where he lives. He is a uniquely talented ladies tailor.

Have you had to say no to films now that everyone wants to work with you?
Practically I can’t do as many films I would like to so sometimes you have to learn to say no. But people are kind enough and understand to see where I am coming from and the honesty with which I am saying no to them. It is nothing personal at all. There are some people who do wait and if the script is very exciting, I make sure they don’t wait too long. I try and figure out somehow, I have been thinking of taking a break but then a really interesting script comes along so the greed of the actor in me comes out! I am sure there will be a time where I might just do one film a year, but then nothing makes me happier than being in front of a camera.

How are you dealing with your new-found stardom?
It’s overwhelming and yes I am enjoying it. I have nothing but gratitude. People recognise me now, they know me by my name. It makes me happy but it doesn’t do anything more — doesn’t add any pressure or change my performance.

What are some of the changes that have happened for you?
More people know my name now. Earlier people probably would say who is that guy in Queen? But now they know I am Rajkummar Rao. It’s overwhelming and yes I am enjoying it. I have nothing but gratitude. Personally, I don’t think I have changed as a person, nor did I come here to change.

What was the last horror comedy that you have watched and liked?
I enjoyed Bhool Bhulaiyaa. There are either very few horror comedies that have been made or probably I haven’t watched.

Do you believe in ghosts and spirits?
I think there are energies, but it’s only the mind that creates the ghosts and spirits etc. I really don’t believe in any physical forms like ghosts.

Tell us more about your co-star Shraddha
It was great fun working with her. Shraddha is a wonderful girl, so much fun to hang out with. She is very hardworking, daring and someone who will not surrender easily and will be at it.

Is there anything you can’t do or you feel doesn’t suit your persona?
I have full confidence that I can do anything, I can pull off any kind of role. I am also a trained martial artist and I can even do a full action film. I would also love to do a dance film like ABCD!

Has Patralekha watched the trailer? What was her reaction?
Patralekha loved the trailer of Stree and she must have watched the trailer at least 10 times. She especially loved the last dialogue in the trailer.

As an outsider in the industry, have you ever felt the need to fit in?
When I couldn’t land much work in spite of being in the industry for two years, people would advice me to go to parties and network but I am not built for that, messaging people or trying to make small talk is just not my thing. I can’t call people and say ‘Good Morning’ or ‘Hey What’s Up,’ just for the heck of it. All I know is how to act so I’d rather act!

Rajkummar has an impressive and envious lineup of films like Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, Mental Hai Kya, Made In China and Imli and is in talks with for more films to come. We wish him more and more!
