How does Keerthy Suresh Don 110 Looks As Savitri In Mahanati?

One of the things that has caught everyone’s attention is south actress Keerthy Suresh’s uncanny resemblance to yesteryear actress Savitri in Nag Ashwin’s “Mahanati”. Suresh will be playing the role of one of the finest Telugu actresses of time, Savitri. The yesteryear actress had been honored with the title ‘Mahanati’ or great actress in her lifetime for her natural and brilliant portrayal of characters on the silver screen. The bilingual biopic has released today (9th May, 2018) and is titled “Mahanati” in Telugu and “Nadigaiyar Thilagam” in Tamil, with Keerthy Suresh and Dulquer Salmaan in the lead roles.

Keerthy Suresh dons around 110 looks for the movie, as the storyline moves from Savitri’s “Pallakolu” days, the peak of her career to her last years of life. Some early movie posters are evidence of the sheer hard work and dedication by the entire team to recreate the magic of the 1950s and beyond. Suresh’s look will keep on changing as the movie progresses with Savitri’s journey from a novice to a veteran.

Suresh has received immense praise for her beautiful depiction of Savitri on-screen, with Dulquer Salmaan playing the role of her husband, Gemini Ganesan. Samantha Akkineni will be playing the role of Madhura Vani, a journalist.

Recreating a famous scene from “Mayabazaar” (1957), Suresh is opulently dressed up in antique jewelry, and she leans on a table, faintly smiling with a hand on her cheek. Suresh’s stylist Indrakshi Pattanaik had tweeted that this scene was particularly difficult to achieve as the exact ‘Kanjeevaram lehenga and blouse with organza dupatta’ had to be procured within the deadline.

Pattanaik had a month to prepare, and she made the best of it. Savitri’s childhood dressing is earthy and natural colors. Her rise as an actress and falling in love is symbolized by vibrant colors such as red, which also happened to be Gemini Ganesan’s favorite color. Green signifies the couple’s failing marriage, and blue, maroon and moss green show Savitri’s decline in career and personal life.

Fabrics differed as well, as Savitri wore khadi and cotton in her earlier days, and moved on to heavy silks, brocades, chiffon, hand-woven satin and organza in maturity. The stylist observed the differences in jewelry, bindi, accessories and blouses of the era that varied with each decade. For this, Indrakshi’s team had to get hold of vintage saris from Tamil Nadu, (then) Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. She has also maintained Savitri’s trademark long bindi for public appearances, and a round bindi at home.

It took the entire crew more than a year and a half to complete the entire schedule of Mahanati

Designer Gaurang Shah said that it took the team six months of research and a year-long effort of a hundred artisans to recreate the movie’s visuals – all the while the shooting of the movie was going on. It took the entire crew more than a year and a half to complete the entire schedule, starting from costumes to the last day of shoot.
