Experience The Arabian Nights At This Secret Hamlet In Rajasthan

From Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is popular for its palaces and forts. The state is symbolic for its royalty and rich culture. But another hidden jewel in its heritage is the Khimsar hamlet.

This remote hamlet is where the sands seem to roll out into eternity. Resonating the beauty of the Thar Desert, you might come across a small lake that springs out of nowhere.

But tucked amidst the rolling sand dunes, Khimsar looks like a mirage when you approach it for the first time. Arriving in a jeep or camel back, your eyes may take some time to believe that what lies ahead is not an illusion, but an enchanting hamlet with little habitation, and much surreal beauty.

The Khimsar fort is located on the eastern edge of the Thar Desert. The fortress was built in 1523 by Rao Karamsji, the eighth son of Rao Jodha of Jodhpur. As you walk through the battle marked walls, huge rampant and the beautiful terrace, you hear parrots and peacocks calling out in this desert landscape.

A camel cart takes travellers from the fort to the village. As you crest over a sand dune, an enchanting view of an oasis in the middle of thatched huts greets you. Sitting here, encircled by rising dunes of golden sand, you are sure to feel a part of an Arabian fantasy.

You can take a jeep safari ride around the dessert, and might be fortunate to see some desert wildlife. A climb on a hillock near the village affords a mesmerizing view of the desert and the oasis during dawn or dusk. A night out in the open desert might get chilly, but it is worth the cold, as the whole night sky lights up and you might actually see the Milky Way on the horizon, away from lights and rancour of the city.

Closest to Jodhpur, you can stop on your way to Khimsar for a traditional meal of hot jalebis and kachoris. You can stay at the heritage fort, which allows a rustic experience amidst this landscape.

Khimsar lies off the road between Jodhpur and Nagaur. You can arrive at the fort by road, after a two hour drive from Jodhpur.
