Life as a Bollywood star is pretty tough. Bollywood celebs have been basking in controversies since forever now. If you want the limelight, you’d have to tolerate everything that comes with it. The paparazzi severely blurs the lines between the personal and the professional be it the recent Kangana-Hrithik issue or the uproar surrounding Jiah Khan’s suicide. This is not just restricted to actors but also playback singers. Yes, Sonu Nigam has been the victim of major controversies throughout, be it for his personal life, life as an actor or in his music career.

The Azaan Issue Lingers on

As per recent news, Sonu Nigam may be the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s next victim. This might be following his much heated up resistance to the use of loudspeakers for “Azaan”, last year. As per reports, the Maharashtra State Intelligence Department has cautioned the Mumbai police and have advised to enhance the security system for his safety, after a death threat from the fundamentalist group.

The actual incident happened in April last year (2017), when he was the topic of discussion among top notch Islamist fundamentalist groups following his comments on “Azaan” (Muslim prayers). Although the Kal ho na ho singer claims to have mentioned gurudwara and temples as well, he was at the receiving end of a fatwa issued by Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi of the West Bengal Minority Council, which said, a prize money of Rs. 10 lakh would be awarded to the person who shaved Sonu’s head. Sonuwas, however, brave enough to shave his own head in reply to this!

On the occasion when Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya was accused by JNU student activist of verbally attacking her, as a result of which his account was suspended, Sonu Nigam also quit Twitter saying , “I quit Twitter today in defiance of this one sided sham. Every Logical, Sensible Patriot and Humanist should”. In a series of 24 tweets, before quitting twitter, Sonu said, if Abhijeet’s account could have been deleted, Shehla’s one should be suspended too, following her accusation that BJP has a sex racket. Sonu’s reaction was quite vehement and outrageous and that caused quite a stir among the hindi film industry.

On another instance, he had defended the self proclaimed religious preacher Radhe Maa drawing a parallel between her and a Hindu goddess. In reference to this, he has been accused of “hurting religious statements of a section of people”.

These are just a few, Sonu Nigam has been involved in many more controversies other than these. All we can say is Sonu needs to mellow it down a little. He has also openly expressed resistance to constraints in exercising the fundamental right of freedom of speech. Half of India’s population feeds on Bollywood buzz. There is no escape from it. So, if you are a celebrity, you will have to deal with the by-products as well.
