What Is Norovirus And How Can I Stay Protected

If you’ve been feeling a little floozy in the stomach of late, and whatever you eat threatens to come out, chances are it’s a visit from the Norovirus bug.

Also known as the stomach flu, norovirus is a type of contagious Virus that can cause gastrointestinal problems and affects a large number of people every year.

How does it spread?

The main way through which norovirus can enter your system is by eating contaminated food or if you directly come in contact with the virus.

In a majority of cases, the virus spreads from foods in restaurants that have been contaminated by someone who is already suffering from the condition.

What are the symptoms?

After you have been exposed to the virus, you will start noticing the Symptoms in about three to four days.

The most common symptoms of norovirus are:

  • Pain in the stomach or around the abdominal area
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Headache
  • Excessive fatigue

The symptoms usually start getting better within two days, and many people actually get better without the need for any medication.

In severe cases or in those who are already suffering from some other health condition, the symptoms can get serious and may even need hospitalization.

Also, a person who seems to be recovering can still pass around the virus for up to three to four days after full recovery.

What is the treatment?

Norovirus does not have a specific treatment yet as most cases get better without any medication. Also, as this is caused due to virus, it is not curable with antibiotics.

Having fluids to avoid dehydration is one of the best ways to speed up the healing process.

As the norovirus spreads through contamination and is contagious, the best way to keep yourself protected is by always washing your hands, especially when you are outside.
