The Ohio House Motel is Getting a New Tenant With Schneider Deli Making Debut Next Month

You may recognize Schneider Provisions from the spattering of pop-ups owner John Schneider has done. But with a [slight] change in name and a new home, Schneider Deli will open up at the iconic Ohio House Motel in River North next month, according to Schneider’s Instagram page. The 600 N. LaSalle mainstay has commanded visitors since 1960 and has been home to the likes of Cafe Tola and Leghorn Chicken over the years. That’s all well and good. With Schneider’s first brick-and-mortar, this latest tenant looks to capitalize and become the next hit amongst Chicago’s budding Jewish deli scene.

If you’ve never been to the corner of LaSalle & Ohio and seen the landmark let me give you a bit of a visual. It’s old compared to everything around it. It doesn’t look like it belongs but it does for so many reasons. The restaurant space itself is incredibly small and homey, with the counter seating only 21. It can be a bit chaotic but it’s also incredibly well controlled. For a Jewish deli, that’ll fit like a glove.

The menu itself will feature the favorites. Breakfast is huge for working commuters so those headed toward the Loop can pop in for some bagels (from Once Upon a Bagel in Northbrook) and lox or corned beef hash, or perhaps just coffee and some of Schneider’s famous coffee cake. Like it’s deli counterpart, Manny’s Deli, Schneider’s Deli will slice up its pastrami and brisket behind the counter for lunchtime sandwiches. It gives it that true Jewish deli feel even if Schneider’s is like 1/8th the size of Manny’s. Other menu items include classics like Matzo ball soup, latkes, dips and egg salad, as well as, famous floats and specialty handmade sodas.

Personally, I love a good Jewish deli. Whether it be the aforementioned Manny’s Deli (1141 S Jefferson St, Chicago, IL 60607) or Eleven City Diner (1112 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60605), or anywhere serving up homemade staples like Schneider Deli, you go because you know that you’re going to get a damn good meal every single time. Schneider’s Deli is a virtual lock for success given location and concept, and if you’ve ever had the pleasure of trying one of John Schneider’s pop-ups in the past you know that it’s a certainty based on the quality of the food alone.
