In association with International Center for Automotive Technology, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched Mirai, the first all hydrogen-electronic car in India, as a pilot project. It runs on electricity generated from pure hydrogen. It is also considered a zero-emission vehicle, as only water is emitted from the car’s tailpipe.

How does a hydrogen-electronic vehicle work?
Fuel cells are a new technology in the world of motor vehicles. Toyota fuel cell system has been used in Mirai. It produces electricity by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEVs) use hydrogen as their energy source to generate fuel from their fuel cells FCEV also belongs to the family of electrified technology. It includes plug-in hybrid vehicles, battery electronic vehicles, and hybrid electronic vehicles.
FCEVs use a fuel cell stack and H2 tank instead of a gasoline engine. The fuel cell generates electricity from H2 (hydrogen), which powers the motor that drives the car. It does not emit anything other than water. Charging an electric car takes a long time, while this is not the case with a hydrogen car. It will be similar to gasoline or diesel at the filling station. Fuel is stored in high-pressure tanks. It charges the fuel cell stack. Vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells are more efficient than conventional vehicles.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element available on Earth, and the electricity generation process is also environmentally friendly.
Range and Challenges of FCEVs
Talking about Toyota Mirai, this car can cover a distance of about 646 km in a full tank. At present, hydrogen car batteries are not as popular as electric vehicles. That is because the availability of hydrogen as a fuel is a challenge even in developed countries like Japan.
Under the hydrogen policy in India, a target has been set to increase the domestic Production Of Green Hydrogen to 5 million tonnes per annum by the year 2030. As its use increases, infrastructure will also start developing. Regarding the collaboration between Toyota and ICAT, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways says that this is a first-of-its-kind project in India, spreading awareness about Hydrogen FCEV technology and Hydrogen- electronic car in India.
