Early Life, Childhood And Background

Toke Makinwa was born on 3 November 1984 in Lagos state before her parents relocated to Abuja. She is from a very large family where she is the second child out of four siblings. As a very smart kind, she started schooling at age of one. Her father,Caleb Ifemayowa Makinwa, was 35 while her mother, Modupe Monica Makinwa, died at the age of 34 in a gas explosion. After the sudden death of her parents, Toke and her siblings moved into the house of her eldest aunt, Big Mummy, in Ikoyi, Lagos. She was only eight years old when she lost her parents.

She Attended Federal Government College Ogbomoso, Oyo State and proceeded to the University of Lagos where she obatined her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature . After completing her university education , bagging her degree and completing her one year mandatory NYSC service, she relocated back to her home and where she got a job at Zenith Bank . She wasn’t satisfied with her job because her passion was somewhere else not in the banking sector. Toke’s love for the media was in-separable and she refused to let that dream she has nurtured die .

Her first taste of career was when she got a job as radio presenter on cool fm in 1999 which was shortlived. Her dream came true when she got a job with Rhythm 97.3 fm as an On Air Personality . The OAP is a beautiful lady widely known as A fashionista , party goer , and loves to live life to the fullest and at the fast lane.

How and when did you get on to Radio?

“In 1999, Cool Fm had just opened and there was this teenage program that showcased the life of teenagers and topics that interest them like sex education, being good at home, being good in school and it was broadcast every Saturday morning. It was short lived because my parents didn’t think it was a career then, they didn’t even think it was cool being on radio.”

Career

Toke Makinwa hosted the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria beauty pageant in the year 2010. She has has anchored several programs on radio and television. Makinwa was announced as one of the hosts of “3LiveChicks”, an entertainment program which was initially launched only on the Web but was later extended to terrestrial TV stations in late 2012 alongside Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis. She has also featured some Nigerian celebrities like “Tiwa Savage”, “Tonto Dikeh”, “Bez” and several others on the show . She refused to renew her contract with Flytime TV for season 2, and was subsequently replaced by her radio colleague Omalicha.

Toke Makinwa became the brand ambassador of the United Africa Company of Nigeria(UAC) in 2013 alongside Osas Ighodaro Dan Foster and Dare Art Alade. The OAP also signed a multi-million naira contract with Nestle Nigeria to become the new face of Maggi. Toke Makinwa was announced as the host for its latest show Trending by Hip Hop World Magazine in January 2014 and it was debuted on Valentine’s Day. She has interviewed many celebrities, including “Chiwetel Ejiofor”, “Eva Alordiah”, “Femi Kuti”, “OC Ukeje” , “Chidinma” and many others. The beautiful lady has also been featured in many episodes of the program Moments with Mo as a guest Host on the EbonyLife TV Network.

On 21 May 2014, news started making round that Makinwa will be joining the Moments with Mo team as a guest host. She has since featured in many episodes on the EbonyLife TV Network. In 2010, she hosted the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria beauty pageant.

In November 2016, Makinwa released her autobiography “On Becoming” which was authored by her . It tells of her struggles in life after she lost her parents in a house fire at the age of 8, as well as growing up and her version of what led to the break down of her marriage to Maje Ayida. On 15 January 2014, Makinwa had a private wedding ceremony with her heart-rob , Maje Ayida after dating for eight years. In 2015, she separated from her husband following a scandal revealing he had impregnated his ex-girlfriend. The union was finally aborted on 5 October 2017, by an Igbosere High Court in Lagos on the grounds that Ayida committed adultery.
