Born Harrison Tare Okiri, but popularly known by his stage name Harrysong, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and instrumentalist who gained massive recognition after winning the “Most Downloaded Callertune Award” at The Headies 2013 with his critically acclaimed song “tribute to Nelson Mandela”. The young talent who was birthed in Warri Delta state was said to have made up to 50million naira on the tribute song via MTN. He was born to Ijaw parents after living in his early life in Port Harcourt. Early Life , Background, Childhood And Education

Harrysong was born March 30, 1981 and he is the only child to Ijaw parents in Warri, Delta State. He lost his mother at his early age and his father got married to another woman . He had problem with his step mother which later led to him packing out of the house and dropping out of school to pursue his Music Career after moving to Port Harcourt. His music career started properly at the age of 11 as a congarist in the church his mother served as the music director before he went on to learn contemporary gospel music.

The talented singer revealed that his professional music career started in 2007,when he just came to Lagos which was after he left his father’s house as a result of the constant brawl with his step mother . Getting to Lagos, Harrysong started pursuing his career by going to the studio everyday to record new song and going to clubs at night to perform. One day, he met Kcee at O’jez Club that was how God answered his call after Kcee introduced him to some influential people his life took a good turn to the permanent site. Kcee connected him with people who nurtured him and helped his career grew from strength to strength . He started enjoying the fruit of his labour officially in 2012.

While recounting his life stories in a chat with news men , he revealed that back then, he used to rehearse people’s songs to go and perform at clubs. One day , he didn’t come back home on time from a show he went to perform and they locked him outside the house because he was squatting with his friend as at that time. What really got him angry was that he wasn’t even allowed to perform at the show because he wasn’t popular. Harrysong had no other option than to sleep under the bridge in Ikeja till the next day. I didn’t do any other thing in Lagos, music was all i did all those years as i moved from studio to studio writing free songs for people and following live bands to perform”.

Before his mother died , they were already separated because they later realised that they are relations after giving birth to the singer. “They separated because I was given birth to by two relations. My father and mother are actually brother and sister. They gave birth to me before they could realize that.  It was a big abomination, so they had to separate. Even, they attempted to kill my father in that village, but he fled, because in Warri where I come from, it is a taboo”.

Music Career

Harrysong’s music career kicked off in the church at the age of 11 . He started as a congarist in the church his mother served as the music director before he went on to learn contemporary gospel music. He relocated to Lagos to pursue his music career in 2007 where he performed in night clubs until he met Kcee which led to him signing for “Five Star Music”. He became known as a Nigerian singer after the release of the single “I’m In Love” and “Taiye & Kehinde”. The video of the song topped music video charts including Trace TV. In 2012, Harrysong released his first studio album titled Testify through QuestionMark Entertainment . He subsequently did a song for Nelson Mandela after his death in 2013 which caught MTN’s attention and they bought the song and used it for MTN caller tune .

The tribue to Mandela song was is one of the biggest caller tunes on the MTN platform, and they reportedly paid him 50 million for the song according to reports. When the Arabanco singer was asked about this deal in an interview he said ;

“It’s been fun working with mtn, because many things were just laid down for you on a Platter of gold and recently MTN sponsored all my expenses and trip to the recent Grammy, so it’s been fun.”
