SYNOPSIS

Born “Olawale Ashimi” , prefer to be called “Olawale Olofo’ro” and more popular by his stage name “Brymo”, is a Nigerian recording artist and composer who gained fame after signing up for his music career. His career as a singer started while he was still pursuing his basic education in secondary school precisely. He got signed to Chocolate City in 2010, but breached his contractual agreement with the label in 2013 with lead to some legal actions taken against him by the label management.

He has released couple of albums which were well-received , his first Album ever was “Brymstone”, released in 2007. He later released his second studio album, “TheSonOfaKapenta”, was released in 2012. TheSonOfaKapenta album was a very popular one and it spawn singles “Ara” and “Good Morning” to name a few. On 20th of October 2013, Brymo released his third studio album and he titled this one “Merchants, Dealers & Slaves”. The latest album received generally positive reviews from music critics and he subsequently released two singles: “Down” and “Eko” as a predecessor of the album. And again, he release “Tabula Rasa “ , his fourth studio album made available on 30th October 2014. “Fe Mi” was it lead single and it was generally described as a “soft traditional ballad”.

On 8 December 2015, the former Chocolate City singer went ahead to release an eight-track compilation album titled “Trance”. Later that year, he signed an international distribution deal with Tate Music Group . His last album obviously the latest was released on 9 May 2016 and the title is Klĭtôrĭs. “Happy Memories” was the eleven tracks album lead single .

Early Life, Childhood And Background

Olawale Ashimi aka Brymo was born in 1986 in the town of Ojo, Lagos State, to a carpenter father and a petty trading mother. He was raised in the neighborhood of Okokomaiko by his parents . Brymo attended Aganju Aka Primary School between 1990 and 1997. According to the Ara crooner, ” I was very troublesome while growing up, and i always get into numerous fights with other kids from my neighborhood”. His childhood ambition was to become a professional footballer after graduating from school but he had a twist of fate when he became a musician. Completing his primary school education, he proceeded to Ajangbadi High School for his secondary school education between 1997 and 2003 . After obtaining his SSCE certificate from Ajangbadi High School , he later gained admission into Lagos State University to study zoology but had to drop out due to financial problems as he couldn’t keep up with school expenses.

He recorded his first song as a musician in the year 1999 while he was still in secondary school and titled it “Future”. He later teamed up with some of his friend to form a music group called “The Aliens” . Brymo was a very important member of the group because he was very active. They wrote about 85 songs in a period of two years but they group was eventually discontinued in 2005 when they started having problems. According to the singer, his inspiration to become a musician originated after listening to his mother sing along to numerous fuji songs.

His music career took a good turn when he was introduced to M.I Abaga. The whole thing happened in 2010 when he Brymo received a call from Denrele Edun, whom he met few years earlier. Meanwhile, Denrele Edun has already told M.I about him and the Choc City boss demanded to see him in person. They finally met and he was introduced him to Jesse Jagz and Iceprince ushering him into chocolate city music label. He was later signed to Chocolate City. Before he officially inked the recording contract with Chocolate City, he did a song with Jesse Jagz titled song “Love You” which was also included in Jag’s debut studio album, Jag of All Tradez (2011).

Music Career And Rise To Stardom

After parting ways with his music group The Aliens, Brymo launched into his solo career, recording his first single in 2005. While he was on his own without any assistance from record label, he sought out the assistance of a local talent spotter, who assisted him in recording his debut album entitled Brymstone with Bujoc Records. He continued persisting as he also went ahead to released a single entitled “Shawdy” along with a music video which peaked at number two on the MTV Base Africa top 10 countdown . “Shawdy” also peaked at number one on the Nigezee top 10 as well as earning a nomination at the Soundcity Music Video Awards.

His massive break-through happened in 2010 when he met Nigerian superstar rapper M.I Abaga through Denrele Edun . The following year which is 2011, Brymo released his first single, “Ara”, under the Chocolate City label, produced by Legendury Beatz. Another epic moment in his music career was when he was featured “Oleku” by Ice Prince in 2010, he rose to instant fame and his career got a major boost . He was also featured on other hits like “Action Film” by M.I, “Attention” by 2-Shotz and “Ma wo be’ by Sasha.

He released an album with Chocolate City in 2012 called TheSonOfaKapenta before leaving the label in 2013 . He also released other albums including Brymstone in 2007, TheSonOfaKapenta in 2012, Merchants, Dealers & Slaves October 2013, Tabula Rasa on 30 October 2014 and Trance released on the 8th of December 2015 .

Why Brymo Left Chocolate City

In May 2013, Brymo announced via Twitter that he is no longer with Chocolate City. Responding to this claim , Audu Maikori, who was the CEO of Chocolate City at the time debunked the claim made by Brymo during a press conference at the label’s office in Lekki. Maikori made it clear that Brymo still had three years left on his contract, and still needed to record two albums. According to a report published by Vanguard newspaper , Maikori revealed that Brymo committed an act of insubordination when he refused to remove an inappropriate picture he posted on Instagram.

Brymo made a revelation about the whole story when he spoke with journalists in June 2013, he said Chocolate City cheated him when they failed to explain how his second studio album leaked. He also said that there was no accountability on how his album was being sold and distributed. Brymo went ahead to sign a distribution deal with Spinlet, enabling them to distribute his next album online. Spinlet aborted the deal after Chocolate City made them aware of its existing contract with the singer.

To cut the long story short, Chocolate City took Brymo to court and he was restrained from partaking in musical ventures beyond the confines of his contract. Brymo ignored the order from the court and went ahead to release his third studio album . The judge of Federal High Court of Lagos restrained Brymo from releasing and distributing any musical work, pending Chocolate City’s lawsuit against him. At the end, Brymo didn’t win the case here is what he said;
“we had the opportunity to iron it out in court but they fried it up. I don’t know what they did but they definitely spoke to the judge and spoke to the lawyers and scrapped the case, they are lawyers; they can do it.”

Personal Life And Relationship

Brymo joined the long list of Nigerian musicians who are baby daddies , his son Waju Ashimi was born on the 27th of  March 2015. He uploaded pictures of Waju onto his Instagram account for the first time on 12 November 2015.
