'I Want To Go Beyond Romantic Roles' | Kriti Kharbanda

A lot of things changed for Bengaluru-based actor Kriti Kharbanda after she made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Raaz: Reboot’ opposite Emraan Hashmi.

She has since then been flooded with offers from all language industries and literally has no dates to give away. It’s not always that actors get to work on scripts that revolve around them but Kriti has been fortunate to get work that is in her favour. She is awaiting the release of ‘Dalapathy’ opposite Prem in Kannada and is simultaneously working on ‘Guests in London’ and ‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’ in Hindi.

In an interview with Nina C George, the actor talks about what keeps her on her toes.

What’s the biggest change for you after moving from Kannada films to Bollywood?

While working in Kannada films, I was living with my parents, in a very protected environment. The scope for growth as a person was much less because I had everybody and everything readily available. In Mumbai, I have to do everything on my own, from paying the bills to grocery shopping and this has made me a more responsible person. Bollywood is a more competitive industry.

Are you happy with the kind of scripts that are coming your way?

Working in ‘Guests in London’ after ‘Raaz: Reboot’ is a great transition. The roles that are coming my way are not bad but now I want to go beyond romantic roles, running around trees and looking pretty. I want roles that challenge me.

How is it working on ‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’?

I am working with Rajkummar Rao in ‘Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana’. Rajkummar is an actor who chooses his scripts in a very intelligent way. The film has given me the character that I have been craving to work on for a very long time. It’s a story that revolves around two people who literally carry the film on their shoulders. I have always wanted to work on roles that need to be handled responsibly and I have found that in this script.

Tell us about your role in ‘Guests in London’.

It is a full-fledged comedy film where I play a Gujarati girl who also happens to be a taxi driver in London. More than half the film was shot in London. Interestingly, I had to take driving lessons for it.

How is it to work in a full- length comedy film?

At first, I was very confused and didn’t know if I would be able to pull off a full-length comedy film but the director gave me the confidence and I am glad that I was able to perform the role quite well. There are a lot of entertaining moments in the film.

Have you signed any Kannada films of late?

Not yet. I am still reading a couple of scripts.
