Maximilien Luce, born in 1858, was a French artist. He created art in the Neo-Impressionist Style and became known for his engravings, illustrations, and paintings.
At the age of 14, Luce became an apprentice for a wood engraver while also going to art classes in the evenings. Four years later, in 1876, he began working in an art studio making wood-cut prints for various publications. It was here that he met some French Impressionist painters and enrolled in portrait painting classes.
Luce was called up for French military service in 1879. He served for the next four years, during which he managed to be transferred to Paris. It was also during this time that he transitioned almost entirely from wood engraving to painting.
His initial paintings were heavily inspired by Impressionism, but after meeting different artists over the years, he became enamored with the Divisionist style, which eventually became known as Pointillism. This cocktail of influences resulted in Luce becoming a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist art movement.
Luce painted mostly landscapes, although he also painted political subject matter to express his ideas around government and politics.
Luce not only shared his painting style with the Neo-Impressionist movement, but he shared many of the political ideologies of his contemporaries too. He was a staunch and vocal advocate for anarchism, contributing many illustrations to anarchist publications. He even spent time behind bars for his anti-government sentiments.
He was a member of the Société des Indépendants, and he exhibited in nearly every one of their shows from 1887 until he died in 1941. He even served as president of the group for 5 years until he resigned in protest of the group’s rules against not allowing Jewish artists to exhibit.
In his later years, he withdrew from his anarchist activism and began painting in a more Impressionist style. He died in 1941 in France.
