10 Famous Artworks By Willi Baumeister

Willi Baumeister, born in 1889 in Stuttgart, Germany, was a German painter, typographer, art professor, and scenic designer. He was a vocal advocate for abstract art in Germany, although he avoided aligning himself with any particular movement. His art was exhibited at both the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics as part of the art competition.

Baumeister began his career in the art world with an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Stuttgart. During this time he also took classes at the Stuttgart Art Academy, among others. In 1911 he made his first trip to Paris, and a year later appeared in his first exhibition in Zurich.

His budding career was interrupted by the First World War in which he fought. Following his discharge from military service, Baumeister banded together with a group of other artists to form the group known as Üecht. He remained in this group for the next 3 years while he ventured into stage design and completed his studies. On top of his art, he also created advertisements for some well-known brands. By this stage, he had become well known in Germany which led to his first solo exhibition in France in 1927.

In the early stages of his career, Baumeister’s work was inspired by impressionism and Cubism. This inspiration continued to inform his work until the late 1920s. After his return from the First World War, Baumeister consciously developed his style further and organic shapes began appearing more frequently. Although this was a trend of the time, Baumeister’s work drew inspiration from ancient and prehistoric art.

Baumeister was a teacher at the Städelsche Kunstschule in Frankfurt. He lost this position in 1933 when the Nazi government came into power. He was eventually banned from exhibiting his work although, despite this, he continued to paint in secret. Here is a list of artworks by Willi Baumeister
