Who are Sherwood Street?

“Sherwood Street are Russ (Vocals and Cajon) and Lex (Guitar and Backing Vocals). 2 musicians who sound like at least 4 when playing live! We do mashups and unique versions of tracks designed to fill dance floors.”

Give us a wow fact about your act!

“Russ chooses the songs for the duo and writes the mashups, then sends them through to Lex for reworking on guitar. 9 times out of 10, Lex hasn’t heard of the songs, so listens once or twice for the main hooks and then writes something intertwining the key themes and his own style. This is what gives us the signature Sherwood Street sound.”

What inspired you both to become musicians?

“Russ was inspired by watching a video of Queen performing at Wembley, fascinated by how music and performance can move people so much. Lex was inspired by his dad, a professional saxophone player, with there always being instruments, sheet music and great albums dotted about his childhood home.”

Which song is your favourite to perform?

“It has to be the 90s Dance Medley; 7 minutes of the best dance tracks from the 90s mashed together to keep people on the dance floor. Every time we have played it, the dance floor has been full with people cheering each song as it arrives in the medley! People singing along with ‘Freed from Desire’ is a real highlight!”

Out of the songs you’ve been asked to learn, which is your favourite?

“We got asked to do a mashup involving American Boy by Estelle ft Kanye West, which was a lot of fun to write. We mixed it with our version of Dance Monkey by Tones & I, which is a bluesy/funky/rocky take on the song. Crossing into American Boy, people are always surprised, even more so when the rap kicks in!”

One final song question, which is the song you can always rely on to fill the dance floor?

“On top of the 90s Dance Medley, the other one that always fills the dance floor is ‘Shut Up and Dance/Someone You Loved/Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. People of all ages seem to love dancing to each of those amazing party tracks!”

Do you get on with each other all of the time?

“As there are only 2 of us, thankfully yes! Having gigged together for over 10 years, we know each other very well and not only gig regularly together, but also practice weekly. Sorry that there is no drama to report…”

Who has the most annoying habit (and what is it)?

“Russ constantly writes different mashups at a rate faster than we can get through in weekly practices. We currently have a waiting list of about 40 and growing.”

What’s the best thing about being musicians?

“Simply, getting to do what we love, whilst making people happy. The challenge of coaxing people out of their seats and onto the dance floor keeps us motivated. We love formulating the thoughts for the songs, crafting them and performing them to make people’s parties the best they can be.”

… and what’s the worst?

“Being asked to do one more when the venue has told us that the music has to stop.”

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you at a wedding/event?

“Performing at an event in our home city of Leicester in the Premier League winning season and a Jamie Vardy impersonator joining us on stage for a Kasabian track. Not only was it the weirdest thing, but I think it may be the most Leicester thing to have ever happened.”

Most memorable moment?

“Playing a couple’s first dance amongst the ruins of a castle, with the sun setting in the background. It was like living in a photograph and it’s now embedded in our minds.”

If you weren’t musicians, what would you be doing?

“We would be avidly learning to be musicians and aspiring to be gigging. We wouldn’t want to be doing anything else!”
